Wrangler's Rescue by B.J. Daniels - Excerpt

Book details
Hardcover: 304 pages
Publisher: HQN; Original edition (November 20, 2018)

Book description
She’ll risk everything to bring her cowboy back home…

One week ago, Cyrus Cahill told Ashley Jo “AJ” Somerfield that he’d be back in her arms by the weekend. He just needed to buy a bull for his ranch, and then they’d pick up where they left off after that romantic ride through the foothills. But now he’s gone missing and everyone—even the sheriff—believes he’s dead.

Everyone…but AJ. She suspects foul play and she won’t rest until Cyrus is back home in Gilt Edge, right where he belongs. Because Cyrus isn’t the kind of cowboy who breaks a promise. And since she’s not the kind of woman who gives up on her man, AJ will risk anything to help bring him home…even her own life.

Don’t miss this suspenseful conclusion of The Montana Cahills series from New York Times bestselling author B.J. Daniels.

AJ couldn’t bear to hear this. She rose, excused herself and headed toward the apartment upstairs over the Stagecoach Saloon where she’d been living. Gigi was upstairs packing to leave as she walked in.

Her friend dropped what she was doing and hugged her. “I’m so sorry. I know you cared about him.”

She’d had a crush on him for months. But in the weeks before he’d left, she’d fallen in love with him. From the beginning, she’d sensed something special between them. She hadn’t imagined that any more than she was imagining he was still alive. She felt it, heart deep.

“I know that look,” Gigi said, holding her at arm’s length to search her gaze. “What are you planning to do?”

“It’s just this feeling that I can’t shake.”

Her friend groaned. “Honey—”

“If they call off the search, I have to go look for him.”

Gigi’s eyes widened. “In the entire Caribbean? Do you have any idea how long that could take?”

She shrugged. “Good thing I’m rich, huh, and have plenty of time.” She and Gigi both had come from wealthy families. She could live on the trust fund her grandmother had set up for her and never need to work a day in her life. Not that she’d ever considered it. She enjoyed working and making her own money. She had never touched a cent of the trust fund. But she would now if she had to.

“What about your job?” her friend asked.

“Darby will either give me the time off or accept my resignation.”

“I wasn’t referring to your bartending job, AJ,” Gigi said impatiently. “You’re a high-powered attorney and your father expects you to join the family business when you’re done doing your thing here.”

“I was a high-powered attorney. And I’ve told you, I don’t want to work for the family business. It isn’t where I belong.”

“Your father might disagree,” her friend pointed out. Gigi had met him so she knew how determined AJ’s father could be.

“You know, I was never going back. I wanted to stay here.” Her voice broke.

“And marry Cyrus. Oh, honey, what if he’s gone?”

She shook her head. “I wouldn’t be feeling the way I do if he was dead. I’m going to find him. As long as it takes. I have to find him. He’s alive and—”

“Wouldn’t we have heard from him if he was alive? If he’d been rescued?”

“Maybe not. Maybe he’s somewhere where he can’t get word out. I just know that I have to look for him. If I did nothing…” AJ shook her head. “I would never forgive myself.”

“Give me a few days and I’ll go with you.”

“Gigi, you have employees waiting for you to get your restaurant open again.” A fire in the building where Gigi had her Houston restaurant had caused fire and water damage. Now that the remodeling was underway it wouldn’t be long before Gigi could get her business going again and her employees back to work. She shook her head. “I appreciate your offer, but I have to do this myself.”

“Promise that you’ll wait and give the trained personnel a chance to find him before you do anything rash.”

AJ smiled at her friend. “Me, do anything rash? That is so not like me.”

The Lady Travelers Guide to Deception with an Unlikely Earl by Victoria Alexander - Review

I received this book free from the publisher. All opinions are my own

Series: Lady Travelers Society (Book 3)
Mass Market Paperback: 384 pages
Publisher: HQN; Original edition (November 20, 2018)
ISBN-13: 978-0373804061

Book description
Set sail for love in this sparkling new adventure in #1 New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander’s Lady Travelers Society series.

Harry Armstrong has spent years in Egypt, recovering relics and disregarding rules. Now he’s back in England with a new title and a new purpose: penning his exploits. But his efforts are overshadowed by London’s favorite writer about Egypt—a woman they call The Queen of the Desert, of all things. Worse, her stories—serialized in newspapers and reprinted in books—are complete rubbish.

Miss Sidney Honeywell didn’t set out to deceive anyone. It’s not her fault readers assumed her Tales of a Lady Adventurer in Egypt were real! Admitting her inadvertent deception now would destroy her reputation and her livelihood. But when the Earl of Brenton challenges her to travel to Egypt to prove her expertise, accompanied by his dashing, arrogant nephew, what choice does she have but to pack her bags?

With the matchmaking founders of the Lady Travelers Society in tow, Harry is determined to expose Sidney’s secret. But the truth might not be as great a revelation as discovering that love can strike even the most stubborn of hearts.

My thoughts
This book was every bit as good as the first one in the series. You may read it as a stand alone if you wish but trust me you will want to go back to the first one. I enjoyed getting to travel with all the ladies. The author did a good job of telling about the adventures in Egypt as well as England. I also really liked how Harry and Sidney played off of each other. The author's writing style keeps the story flowing and her descriptions keep you wanting more. A great book to read on a cold winter day.

The Governess's Convenient Marriage by Amanda McCabe - Review

I received this book free from the author. All opinions are my own.

Book details
Series: Debutantes in Paris (Book 2)
Mass Market Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Harlequin Historical; Original edition (November 20, 2018)
ISBN-13: 978-1335523013

Book description
A lady turned governess…

A life-changing proposal!

When Lady Alexandra Mannerly last saw Malcolm Gordston, he was a poor crofter’s son—someone a sheltered duke’s daughter would never be allowed to marry. But scandal has rocked her arrogant family, and Alex now leads a quiet life as a governess in Paris—where she meets Malcolm again! Now he’s a wealthy, powerful department store owner…and determined to make her his bride!

Meet the author - Amanda McCabe
Amanda McCabe wrote her first romance at sixteen – a vast historical epic starring all her friends as the characters, written secretly during algebra class! She's never since used algebra, but her books have been nominated for many awards, including the RITA Award, Booksellers Best, National Readers Choice Award and the Holt Medallion. In her spare time she loves taking dance classes and collecting travel souvenirs. Amanda lives in Oklahoma. Email her at: amanda@ammandamccabe.com

My thoughts
I really enjoyed this book. The theme of how the rich become humbled and the not so rich move up. I liked that whole idea because it really makes people understand each other better. Although you do have to feel a bit sorry for Lady Alexandra going from having money to having to be a governess. The author does a good job of getting the setting just right. I know she does her research and it shows. Her writing is easy to read and holds your attention well. I look forward to the next book from her.

Snowfall on Lighthouse Lane by JoAnn Ross - Review

I received this book free from the publisher. All opinions are my own

Book details
Series: Honeymoon Harbor #2
Mass Market Paperback: 432 pages
Publisher: HQN; Original edition (October 30, 2018)
ISBN-13: 978-1335556783

Book description
Lose yourself in the magic, charm and romance of Christmas in the Pacific Northwest as imagined in JoAnn Ross’s heartwarming Honeymoon Harbor series.

Growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, Jolene Harper is forever indebted to the mother who encouraged her to fly—all the way to sunny LA and a world away from Honeymoon Harbor. Although Jolene vowed never to look back, returning home isn’t even a question when her mom faces a cancer scare. Which means running into Aiden Mannion all over town, the first boy she ever loved—and lost—and whom she can barely look in the eye.

Aiden’s black-sheep reputation may have diminished when he joined the marines, but everything he’s endured since has left him haunted. Back in Honeymoon Harbor to heal, he’s talked into the interim role of police chief, and the irony isn’t lost on the locals, least of all Aiden. But seeing Jolene after all these years is the unexpected breath of fresh air he’s been missing. He’s never forgotten her through all his tours, but he’s not sure anymore that he’s the man she deserves.

Despite the secret they left between them all those years ago, snow is starting to fall on their picturesque little town, making anything seem possible…maybe even a second chance at first love.

My thoughts
JoAnn Ross ranks right up there with Sheila Roberts and Robyn Carr to me. Honeymoon Harbor is a town I would love to visit on a nice getaway trip. Nice, quiet and quaint along with a cast of unforgettable cast of characters. One thing I like about this book is how the characters are real. They could be anyone you know - your neighbor or friend. I also like how Jolene and Aiden came how and got a second chance on happiness. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Excerpt
“Why’d you have to tell Nelson you wanted to be more than a figurehead vice president?” She play-punched his chest. “Everything was fine when he was ignoring you.”

He kissed her lips and then her neck. “You’re so, so cute when you pout.”

“Badass cops do not pout.”

“Mine does when she doesn’t get her own way, and it’s truly adorable.”

She scowled at him. “Badass cops are not adorable.”

“Mine is.” Leaving a trail of hot kisses on her neck, he said, “Come with me, Samantha. London, Paris, Rome, the Vatican, Amsterdam, Brussels, The Hague. Come see the world with me.”

Sam had never been to Europe and had always wanted to go, so she was sorely tempted to say to hell with her responsibilities.

“Come on.” He rolled her earlobe between his teeth and pressed against her suggestively. “Three whole weeks together away from the madness of DC. You know you want to go. Gonzo could cover for you at work, and things have been slow anyway.”

There hadn’t been a homicide in more than a week, which meant they were due, and that was another reason to stay home. “Don’t say that and put a jinx on us.”

“Come away with me. Scotty will be fine. We’ll FaceTime with him every day and bring him presents. He’ll be well cared for by everyone else who loves him.” He kissed her neck as he unbuttoned her shirt and pushed it aside. “You’d get to meet the Queen of England.”

Sam moaned. She loved the queen—speaking of a badass female.

“And the Pope. Plus, you’ll need some clothes—and shoes. Lots of shoes.”

“Stop it.” She turned her face to avoid his kiss. “You’re fighting dirty.”

“Because I want my wife to come with me on the trip of a lifetime? I need you Samantha.”

As he well knew, she could deny him nothing when he said he needed her. “Fine, I’ll go! But only if it’s okay with Scotty and if I can swing it at work.”

“Yes,” her husband said on a long exhale. “We’ll have so much fun.”

“Will we actually get to see anything?”

He pushed himself up to continue packing. “I’ll make sure of it.”

“Um, excuse me.”

“What’s up?”

“My temperature after your attempts at persuasion.”

A slow, lazy smile spread across his face, making him the sexiest man in this universe—and the next. “Is my baby feeling a little needy?”

She pulled her T-shirt over her head and released the front clasp on her bra. “More than a little.”

“We can’t have that.” Stepping to the foot of the bed, he grasped the legs of her yoga pants and yanked them off.

“Lock the door.”

“Scotty’s asleep.”

“Lock the door, or this isn’t happening.” With Secret Service agents all over their house, Sam couldn’t relax if the door wasn’t locked.

“This is definitely happening, but if it’ll make you happy, I’ll lock the door.”

“It’ll make me happy, which will, in turn, make you happy.” She splayed her legs wide-open to give him a show as he returned from locking the door, and was rewarded with gorgeous hazel eyes that heated with desire when he saw her waiting for him.

“You little vixen,” he muttered.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Sure, you don’t,” he said, laughing as he came down on top of her and set out to give her a preview of what three weeks away together might be like.

Winter at the Beach by Sheila Roberts - Review

I received this book free from the author - All opinions are my own

Book details
Series: A Moonlight Harbor Novel (Book 2)
Mass Market Paperback: 384 pages
Publisher: MIRA; Original edition (October 23, 2018)
ISBN-13: 978-0778369950

Book description
The town of Moonlight Harbor needs to convince tourists that the beach is still the place to be—even when the sunshine goes south for the winter. Jenna Jones, new proprietor of The Driftwood Inn, has the perfect idea: a holiday festival called Seaside with Santa.

Jenna is happy to throw herself into planning the event. With all the decorating, preparation and extra reservations at the inn because of the festival—and with two wonderful but very different men hoping to claim more of her time and her heart—Jenna is busy. Busy, but happy. Even with her troublesome ex in the picture, life feels as close to perfect as she’s ever known.

Until the weather turns her festival into a farce. Suddenly Mother Nature is not only raining on Jenna’s parade, the old bat’s trying to blow the floats and their princesses out to sea. Soon everyone is without power and the road out of town is blocked. And Jenna has a full motel.

After the generator conks out, she’s not so sure she and her guests will make it through to the New Year in one piece. But with a little pulling together and a lot of holiday spirit, everyone might find that life—and Christmas—is always good at the beach

My thoughts
Of course I have to say it another great book by Sheila. I enjoyed getting to know the new cast of characters that decided to go to the Christmas Festival at Moonlight Harbor. I connected a little with Taylor at first as I have a husband who is trying to start his own business. Luckily though he is doing it on the side. I kind of wish Taylor would not have put on the blame on her husband as her job was not paying or working out either so she should have looked for something else. Then you had rude Susan who kept saying the festival was going to fail. She was a negative Nellie. I liked how everyone pulled together when the power went out and made the best of things. That would not be how I would want to spend but they made it work. I wonder who Jenna is going to decide to date Seth or Brody - I think she thought she knew but now not so much. I look forward to the next book to see what adventures will happen in Moonlight Harbor

Anyway, back to Abi: she did not fume that I was being romantic and shortsighted, the way my very frustrated tutor did when I finally fessed up to her, nor did she cry for a month, the way my mother did. Which was, you know, awful.

She made us both a cup of tea, even went back to her room to dig out a packet of Hobnobs, kept for special occasions only. I was on my third Hobnob (already eating for two) before she asked, “So who is the dad?” Which was awkward.

“I’d rather not say,” I mumbled.

“That ugly, is he?” she commented with a smile. Again, I wanted to chortle; I knew it was inappropriate. I mean, I was pregnant! But at the same time, I was nineteen and Abi was funny. “I didn’t even know that you were having sex with anyone,” she added.

“I didn’t feel the need to put out a public announcement.”

Abigail then burst into peels of girlish, hysterical giggling. “The thing is, you’ve done exactly that.”

“I suppose I have.” I gave in to a full-on cackle. It was probably the hormones.

“It’s like, soon you are going to be carrying a great big placard saying, I’m sexually active.”

“And careless,” I added. We couldn’t get our breath now, we were laughing so hard.

“Plus, a bit of a slag, cos you’re not sure who the daddy is.”

I playfully punched her in the arm. “I do know.”

“Of course you do, but if you don’t tell people who he is, that’s what they’re going to say.” She didn’t say it meanly, it was just an observation.

“Even if I tell them who the father is, they’ll call me a slag anyway.” Suddenly, it was like this was the funniest thing ever. We were bent double laughing. Which was odd, since I’d spent most of my teens carefully walking the misogynistic tightrope, avoiding being labelled a slag or frigid, and I’d actually been doing quite a good job of balancing. Until then. It really wasn’t very funny. The laughter was down to panic, probably.

The bedrooms in our student flat were tiny. When chatting, we habitually sat on the skinny single beds because the only alternative was a hard-backed chair that was closely associated with late-night cramming at the desk. The room that was supposed to be a sitting room had been converted into another bedroom so that we could split the rent between six, rather than five.

We collapsed back onto the bed. Lying flat now to stretch out our stomachs that were cramped with hilarity and full of biscuits—and in my case, baby. I looked at my best friend and felt pure love. We were in our second year at uni; it felt like we’d known one another a lifetime. Uni friendships are more intense than any other. You live, study and party together, without the omniscient, omnipresent parental influence. Uni friends are sort of friends and family rolled into one.

Abi and I met in the student union bar the very first night at Birmingham University. Although I would not describe myself as the life and soul of the party, I wasn’t a particularly shy type either; I’d already managed to strike up a conversation with a couple of geology students and while it wasn’t the most riveting dialogue ever, I was getting by.

Then, Abigail walked up to me. Out of nowhere. Tall, very slim, the sort of attractive that girls and Guardian-reading boys appreciate. She had dark, chin-length, sleek, bobbed hair with a heavy, confident fringe. She was all angles, like a desk lamp, and it seemed remarkable that she was poised to shine her spotlight on me.

She shot out her hand in an assured and unfamiliar way. Waited for me to take it and shake it. In my experience, no one shook hands, except maybe men in business suits on the TV. My dad was a teacher; he sometimes wore a suit, but mostly he preferred chinos and a corduroy jacket. I suppose he must have occasionally shaken the hands of his pupils’ parents, but I’d never seen anyone my age shake anyone else’s hand. Her gesture exuded a huge level of jaunty individuality and somehow flagged a quirky no-nonsense approach to being alive. Her eyes were almost black. Unusual and striking.

“Hi. I’m Abigail Curtiz, with a z. Business management, three Bs. You?”

I appreciated her directness. It was a fact that most of the conversations I’d had up until that point hadn’t stumbled far past the obligatory exchange of this precise information. “Melanie Field. Economics and business management combined. AAB.”

“Oh, clever clogs. Two degrees in one.”

“I wouldn’t say—”

She cut me off. “That means you are literally twice as clever as I am.” If she believed this to be true, it didn’t seem to bother her; she took a sip from her wine glass, winced at it.

“Or half as focused,” I said. I thought a self-deprecating quip was obligatory. Where I came from, no one liked a show-off. Being too big for your boots was frowned upon; getting above yourself was a hanging offence.

Abi pulled a funny face that said she didn’t believe me for a moment; more, that she was a bit irritated that I’d tried to be overly modest.
