Interview:
1. Who or what inspired you to start writing?I started to write when my children were little to relieve the monotony of motherhood. One day I sat down with a pile of mystery books I loved and said – “I can do this.”
2. What do you do to help you get over writer's block?
Writing mysteries is essentially like working out a puzzle. When I get stuck, I sketch out the scenes in my journal. It doesn’t look like much, lots of arrows and squiggles, but it helps me visualize where I’ve taken a wrong turn.
3. Do you have scheduled writing time or a certain amount of words you write each day?
I map out a six month writing schedule. I break it down into words per month, per week and then I budget for the unexpected or just plain exhaustion!
4. Where do you get your ideas for your books?
I enjoy sitting in my public library and binge reading every magazine on the shelf. I also read the newspaper regularly and I watch an embarrassing amount of television. With this much stimulation, something eventually pops into my head.
5. When you are not writing what do you like to do?
There’s nothing I like more than spending my free time in Montauk, NY. My books take place on Long Island so I can always find a good excuse to head east – to the beach.
6. What one piece of advice would you like to give to aspiring writers?
I don’t have a writing background. I like to say that I learned to write ‘on the job.’ I knew when I started that I’d be competing with plenty of authors who had majored in English or Journalism. To keep up, I have always been open to criticism. It’s so important to listen to feedback – even when it’s negative.
7. Who is your favorite author or book that you would like to recommend to your readers?
I adore Nelson DeMille’s Plum Island. The main character, John Corey, spoke to me. He was smart, irreverent and fearless and I thought it might be fun to adapt these qualities for a female character. And now I’d like to introduce you to CeCe Prentice, my protagonist. She’s a handful.
8. If you could visit anywhere in the world where would you like to visit?
I guess I can check this off my bucket list as I just booked a family vacation to Ireland. After a summer fling with Ancestry.com, I decided it was time for the entire extended clan to explore our roots.

I can write with both hands
I am missing two ribs
I collect Department 56 Snow Angels
I don’t keep a calendar – it’s all in my head.
I have something in common with my protagonist that is important to the storyline. I guess you’ll have to do some reading and digging to figure it out!
