Book description
While not usually a big deal, one overlooked email would haunt teacher Gilda Greco. Had she read it, former student Sarah McHenry might still be alive.

Suspecting foul play, Constable Leo Mulligan plays on Gilda’s guilt and persuades her to participate in a séance facilitated by one of Canada’s best-known psychics. Six former students also agree to participate. At first cooperative and willing, their camaraderie is short-lived as old grudges and rivalries emerge. The séance is a bust.

Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?

A Love Affair with Yoga

A yoga enthusiast, protagonist Gilda Greco loves to share her experiences and extol the many benefits of the practice.

Here’s her story:

During the first forty-nine years of my life, I was content to be the non-athlete in my circle. Well, one of the non-athletes. Several ladies did play golf and one adventurous soul went white water rafting for a week each summer. For the most part, we were content to participate in book clubs, see movies and theater, and attend gallery openings and other cultural events.

All that changed after I won $19 million in Lotto 649 and embarked on a series of travel adventures.

While visiting a resort in Phoenix, I noticed the constant flow of traffic to a room labeled Studio A. Curious, I asked at the desk and learned that eight yoga classes were scheduled daily, each one overflowing with bodies. The concierge advised me to show up at least ten minutes early for a good spot on the floor.

I paused and wondered if I was ready to devote one hour of my vacation time to touchy-feely, woo-woo Type Bs. This is the image I had in my mind whenever anyone mentioned yoga.

Fortunately, I had leggings and a colorful Barbados t-shirt in my suitcase. The following morning, I showed up at 9:45 for the class that had been labelled “True Beginners.” I wondered at the description—was there such a thing as a “false beginner?” I longed to ask but didn’t want to announce that I was a true neophyte. Glancing around the room, I took note of the Lululemon leisurewear and designer mats. These ladies had come well-prepared for yoga class.

At ten o’clock, a tall, blonde willow made her way to the front of the room. I groaned inwardly, at least I hope it wasn’t actually verbalized. This lithe and limber size 4 wonder could easily cause stress to my under-used muscles and ligaments.

I needn’t have worried.

From the start, she put us at ease with her well-modulated voice and Zen-like calm. The Sanskrit names and their English translations flowed as she explained and demonstrated each pose. While I can’t remember the individual poses, I can still recall her advice: “A yoga pose is a journey, not a destination.” How reassuring that I didn’t have to get it right the first time, the second time, or the twentieth time. What mattered was that I found the courage to keep trying and failing.

I did attend five other sessions at the resort, this time fully attired in Lululemon. Each day, I felt myself relaxing more and more into the slow movements and poses. I could also feel stretching of muscles and improved range of motion.

When I returned home to Sudbury, I investigated several studios and ended up at Jean Taylor’s studio at the south end. I also managed to persuade my BFFS—Laura Jamieson and Adele Martino—to join me. It didn’t take long for the weekly class to become an essential component of our busy lives. I also try to incorporate stretches and sun salutations into my morning regimen.

Yoga has taught me to be still when I’m uncomfortable and to breathe through the twinges of pain I experience in some of the poses. If the pain persists, I know when to stop and try alternate poses or reach for a bolster, strap, or foam block.

The meditative quality of yoga has also helped with my moods. I still have my personal challenges, but I’m less reactive and more inclined to let things go. Instead, I gravitate toward that beautiful place where I can step out of time and leave all my concerns behind.
