Series: A Mainely Needlepoint Mystery (Book 7)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Kensington (October 30, 2018)
ISBN-13: 978-1496716712

Book description
Angie's first auction may turn out to be her last—when she bids on a coat of arms that someone would literally kill to possess . . .

Tagging along to an estate sale with her fellow Needlepointer, antiques shop owner Sarah Byrne, Angie Curtis impulsively bids on a tattered embroidery of a coat of arms. When she gets her prize back home to Haven Harbor, she discovers a document from 1757 behind the framed needlework—a claim for a child from a foundling hospital. Intrigued, Angie is determined to find the common thread between the child and the coat of arms.

Accepting her reporter friend Clem Walker's invitation to talk about her find on the local TV news, Angie makes an appeal to anyone who might have information. Instead, both women receive death threats. When Clem is found shot to death in a parking lot, Angie fears her own life may be in jeopardy. She has to unravel this historical mystery—or she may be the next one going, going . . . gone . . .

Meet the author - Lea Wait
Lea Wait lives on the coast of Maine. A fourth generation antique dealer, and author of the Agatha-nominated Shadows Antique Print mystery series, she loves all things antiques and Maine, and she’s learning to do needlepoint. She also writes historical novels for young people set in (where else?) nineteenth-century Maine. Lea adopted her four daughters when she was single; she’s now the grandmother of eight, and married to artist Bob Thomas. Find her at Facebook, Goodreads, and at www.leawait.com

My thoughts
I loved the theme behind this book. How cool would it be to find a document from the 1700s and to be able to research the history behind it. But in this case it was not such a good find. I enjoyed going on the journey with Angie. This author's writing style was so easy to read. I also liked how she developed the characters and described the scenes. The author did a good job of giving us enough hints to make you think you figured out the murder then she puts a twist in there. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by her.

A Love Affair with Yoga

A yoga enthusiast, protagonist Gilda Greco loves to share her experiences and extol the many benefits of the practice.

Here’s her story:

During the first forty-nine years of my life, I was content to be the non-athlete in my circle. Well, one of the non-athletes. Several ladies did play golf and one adventurous soul went white water rafting for a week each summer. For the most part, we were content to participate in book clubs, see movies and theater, and attend gallery openings and other cultural events.

All that changed after I won $19 million in Lotto 649 and embarked on a series of travel adventures.

While visiting a resort in Phoenix, I noticed the constant flow of traffic to a room labeled Studio A. Curious, I asked at the desk and learned that eight yoga classes were scheduled daily, each one overflowing with bodies. The concierge advised me to show up at least ten minutes early for a good spot on the floor.

I paused and wondered if I was ready to devote one hour of my vacation time to touchy-feely, woo-woo Type Bs. This is the image I had in my mind whenever anyone mentioned yoga.

Fortunately, I had leggings and a colorful Barbados t-shirt in my suitcase. The following morning, I showed up at 9:45 for the class that had been labelled “True Beginners.” I wondered at the description—was there such a thing as a “false beginner?” I longed to ask but didn’t want to announce that I was a true neophyte. Glancing around the room, I took note of the Lululemon leisurewear and designer mats. These ladies had come well-prepared for yoga class.

At ten o’clock, a tall, blonde willow made her way to the front of the room. I groaned inwardly, at least I hope it wasn’t actually verbalized. This lithe and limber size 4 wonder could easily cause stress to my under-used muscles and ligaments.

I needn’t have worried.

From the start, she put us at ease with her well-modulated voice and Zen-like calm. The Sanskrit names and their English translations flowed as she explained and demonstrated each pose. While I can’t remember the individual poses, I can still recall her advice: “A yoga pose is a journey, not a destination.” How reassuring that I didn’t have to get it right the first time, the second time, or the twentieth time. What mattered was that I found the courage to keep trying and failing.

I did attend five other sessions at the resort, this time fully attired in Lululemon. Each day, I felt myself relaxing more and more into the slow movements and poses. I could also feel stretching of muscles and improved range of motion.

When I returned home to Sudbury, I investigated several studios and ended up at Jean Taylor’s studio at the south end. I also managed to persuade my BFFS—Laura Jamieson and Adele Martino—to join me. It didn’t take long for the weekly class to become an essential component of our busy lives. I also try to incorporate stretches and sun salutations into my morning regimen.

Yoga has taught me to be still when I’m uncomfortable and to breathe through the twinges of pain I experience in some of the poses. If the pain persists, I know when to stop and try alternate poses or reach for a bolster, strap, or foam block.

The meditative quality of yoga has also helped with my moods. I still have my personal challenges, but I’m less reactive and more inclined to let things go. Instead, I gravitate toward that beautiful place where I can step out of time and leave all my concerns behind.

Book description
Southern charm meets the dark mystery of the bayou as a hundred-year flood, a malicious murder, and a most unusual Mardi Gras converge at the Crozat Plantation B&B.

It’s Mardi Gras season on the bayou, which means parades, pageantry, and gumbo galore. But when a flood upends life in the tiny town of Pelican, Louisiana—and deposits a body of a stranger behind the Crozat Plantation B&B—the celebration takes a decidedly dark turn. The citizens of Pelican are ready to Laissez les bon temps rouler—but there’s beaucoup bad blood on hand this Mardi Gras.

Maggie Crozat is determined to give the stranger a name and find out why he was murdered. The post-flood recovery has delayed the opening of a controversial exhibit about the little-known Louisiana Orphan Train. And when a judge for the Miss Pelican Mardi Gras Gumbo Queen pageant is shot, Maggie’s convinced the murder is connected to the body on the bayou. Does someone covet the pageant queen crown enough to kill for it? Could the deaths be related to the Orphan Train, which delivered its last charges to Louisiana in 1929? The leads are thin on this Fat Tuesday—and until the killer is unmasked, no one in Pelican is safe.

A simmering gumbo of a humorous whodunit, Mardi Gras Murder is the fourth piquant installment in USA Today bestselling author Ellen Byron’s award-winning Cajun Country mysteries.

Book details
Series: A Berry Basket Mystery (Book 3)
Mass Market Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Kensington (October 30, 2018)
ISBN-13: 978-1496704900

Book description
It’s peak tourist season in Oriole Point, Michigan—the blueberry buckle of the fruit belt. Nothing draws the crowds quite like their annual carnival. And nothing turns it sour faster than murder . . .

The Blueberry Blow Out festival has begun and it’s time for Marlee Jacob, owner of The Berry Basket, to shine. Unfortunately it’s also bringing out the worst in her fiancé Ryan Zeller. Ryan’s rivalry with Porter Gale, owner of Blueberry Hill Farm, spills over into a very public and very ugly fight. And after they compete in the pie-eating contest and a raucous tug of war, their orchard blood feud takes a deadly turn . . .

The death of the king of Blueberry Hill is a shock but not too surprising—he was a diabetic whose last pig out meal was deliciously fatal. But when authorities discover that someone tampered with Porter’s insulin, a tragic accident is looking like murder—and Ryan is the key ingredient. Now Marlee’s investigation to clear his name is taking her deep into the Gale family secrets, and she’s being shadowed every step of the way by a killer whose sweet revenge is just beginning . . .
Includes Berry Recipes!

My thoughts
I was happy to get the chance to read the next installment in the Berry Basket Series. It was fun to get to visit our old friends in this quaint little town. I kind of like how you have the old feud between the Gale and Zellar families going on as a back part of the story. It gives us a little extra. The author did a great job describing all the little details. You felt like you are part of the festival. She also likes to throw in little curves so just when you think you have it all figured out you find out you are wrong. It took me until the end to figure it all out. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Welcome back to VIRGIN RIVER with the books that started it all…

Sometimes love takes root in unexpected places—if you'll only let it grow

Colin Riordan came to Virgin River to recuperate from a horrific helicopter crash, the scars of which he bears inside and out. His family is wonderfully supportive, but it's his art that truly soothes his troubled soul.

Stung personally and professionally by an ill-advised affair, PR guru Jillian Matlock has rented an old Victorian with a promising garden in Virgin River. She's looking forward to cultivating something other than a corporate brand.

Both are looking to simplify, not complicate, their lives, but when Jillian finds Colin at his easel in her yard, there's an instant connection. And in Virgin River, sometimes love is the simplest choice of all…
Meet the author - Robyn Carr
Robyn Carr is a RITA® Award-winning, eleven-time #1 New York Times bestselling author of almost sixty novels, including the critically acclaimed Virgin River series. The third novel (THE FAMILY GATHERING) in her fan-favorite new series, Sullivan's Crossing, will be released in April 2018. Robyn is a recipient of the Romance Writers of America Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 and in 2017, VIRGIN RIVER was named one of the HarperCollins 200 Iconic Books of the past 200 years. Robyn and her husband live in Las Vegas, Nevada. You can visit Robyn Carr's website at www.RobynCarr.com.

My thoughts
This is one of my favorite authors and I am not sure that I have ever read a bad book by this author. I actually listened to this book and I was not sure I was going to like that as I have read all the others and loved picturing the characters. The narrator grew on me and I ended up enjoying listening to this book just as much as I would have reading it. I loved getting to take a visit back to Virgin River as it has been awhile since I have read one of the books. I remember Colin from a previous book but do not remember Jillian. I liked getting to know her and know I could be friends with her. She is doing almost the same thing with veggies that my husband is starting so that part really hit home. It was fun listening to her and Colin get to know each other. I felt bad for Denny and all he went through and hope he finds true happiness in the future. I am going to be starting the next book in the series soon. Loved this book.

Character interview
Character is Josiah Louise Reynolds, the protagonist in the Josiah Reynolds Mysteries.

How did you get into acting in off the beaten path places?
A group of people I knew put on plays for their friends. You know, something fun to do for a small intimate group. I had nothing to do in the evenings, so I thought it would be exciting – act in a play, be around friends, drink a little bit. I wasn’t expecting murder though.

What is your favorite play?
I think the play we were working on – The Murder Trap By Abigail Keam. We had just done Medea by Euripides. Boy, was that a downer. The Murder Trap was a light comedy about someone getting wacked off. I didn’t have to take it very seriously. Now looking back on it, both plays are about murder, aren’t they? I just can’t seem to get away from dead bodies.

What is the weirdest or scariest thing you have encountered in the places you have acted? I was at Wickliffe Manor, rehearsing for The Murder Trap, when I was walking down a dimly-lit hallway. I glanced over and scream. Well, it was more of a gasp. My mother was staring at me from out of the wall. Then I realized I was looking into a mirror. Oh, Lordy. Women really do turn into their mothers. I’d rather have someone stick a gun in my face than go through that again.

What is it like to help solve a murder? It’s a rush, especially when I’m closing in on someone. I have to be very careful though. My best friend, Matt, got shot by a rogue cop who had it out for me. I’ve almost been killed several times myself when the police have used me as bait to flush the murderer out. But I like puzzles and getting the bad guy off the streets. One time I did uncover the identity of a murderess, but I let her go. I thought her husband had it coming. Don’t tell anyone I told you. It’s our secret, okay?

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about you. I’m a beekeeper, which is how I make my living. I live in the Butterfly, a mid-century marvel sitting on the cliffs of the Kentucky River in the heart of the Kentucky Bluegrass. Besides selling honey at the local farmers’ market, I board Thoroughbreds. I have a very close circle of friends who keep getting shot because of me. Sorry about that, guys. I have one daughter, Asa. She says she’s an insurance fraud agent, but everyone thinks she’s lying. We all think she works for the military or the CIA. She’s a badass, and any man who crosses her is a fool. Maybe she takes after me. I’m not nice. I like that old W C Fields joke when asked if he liked children, he answered, “Yes. Parboiled.” That’s me in a nutshell.

Killer songs and a killer voice, but a killer at her gig?

Vy has always found herself at the center of attention as the lead singer for one of Miami's top cover bands, but when she finds herself at the center of a murder investigation, while performing at the Steel Horse Bar, that changes the tune of the night. Someone believes that Vy knows the truth behind the murder of the bar owner Ricky, and now that person is after her. Vy better figure out quickly who wanted Ricky dead, who is threatening her with her favorite band’s song lyrics, and why she’s falling for the handsome Detective Houston, before she too sings her last note. With a mixture of mystery, mayhem and comedy, you will find yourself immersed in Vy's musical and murderous world.

Meet the author - Zaida Alfaro
The Last Note’s main backdrop, the amazing city of Miami, Florida, is beloved and well-known to me. I was born and raised in Miami, and like the novel’s main character Vy, I am a singer/songwriter, as well as the lead singer to a self-proclaimed cover band. All things relating to music or literature are my passion. I keep a journal, and I am constantly writing poems, stories, and any thought that comes to mind. I have a fascination for black and white films, that have the element of mystery. As I have been told by many, I have a very creative imagination.

My Musical Career
My name is Zaida (yes, Zaida is my real given name). I am named after my beautiful mother. I am the youngest of six. I was born into art. My mother is an amazing artist, composer, and musician. I remember sitting on the couch watching my mom’s fingers move graciously throughout the piano keys. It was mesmerizing for me. I learned how to play the piano from my mother when I was 12 years old. From then on my love for music began, but my love was not for the piano, my love was simply listening to the music. I would keep a journal and constantly write poems, stories, any thought that came to mind. I remember playing the piano, and trying to add my words to this unknown, unfinished melody.

My professional musical career began when I was 17 years of age. I was naive then. I was signed to an independent music label. I spent months at a recording studio trying to shape my own style. I spent most of my summers with my vocal teacher, who I grew very close to. I was taking night time classes in college, and I had a full time job. I spent the weekends and my free time singing and composing. I was trying to live my dream. There was a local hangout called The Warehouse Café. This place was like a church to me. I was there religiously after classes, almost every night. This place was filled with artists, writers, musicians, anything that had to do with the arts. One night, I sat on an old, velvet couch that faced a tiny, wooden stage. A girl, about my age, sat on a bar stool with her guitar and played her song. I remember sitting there thinking to myself that I could do that very thing she was doing. I wanted to express my life, my experiences, my thoughts to strangers. I met an amazing guitarist at The Warehouse Café. I simply asked him to teach me a few chords on the guitar. My high school friend gave me an old, beat up classical guitar (which is the only guitar I compose on to this day). With a few lessons, I started combining my own original poetry with some basic guitar melodies. That was the result of my debut album, “Train Ride” which was released in 2000.

After a few years, and learning the hard way, as an independent artist, I released an EP called “Little Box of Secrets.” I was able to produce this record the way I heard it in my mind. I am more of an adult on this record. My stories come more from my heart, as opposed to the first record, where someone else tried to capture the music. Although this musical journey has been challenging, I am not ready to stop showing the people the world through my eyes. My lyrics portray the different journeys my life has taken me through; heartache, hardships, falling in love, and happiness. I want the people to feel what I felt, to see what I have seen, and to know what I have learned. I want my music to be the window to my soul for the world to peek in. It is more than just listening to the songs; it is breathing in the words.

The Song Peddler

Book details
The Song Peddler Of The Pont Neuf
(historical mystery) Release date: September 4, 2018 at Settecento Press 410 pages

Book description
PARIS, 1788
Facing bankruptcy after years of expensive wars, King Louis XVI calls a meeting of the Estates General, the ancient French legislature which has not met in 174 years. The city hums with talk about modernizing the assembly and changing France into a constitutional monarchy. Paul Gastebois, a confidential inquirer, isn’t interested in politics. He’s busy with the daily tedium of detective work—following foreign diplomats for the Parisian police and helping artisanal guilds enforce their rules. He’d like to make a name for himself solving crimes, but few cases have come his way. Then Paul is hired to find a song peddler who sang bawdy songs to crowds on the Pont Neuf. The missing man had seen someone from his past on the bridge, and had vanished a few weeks later. As Paul searches Paris for the song peddler, his investigation leads him into the world of underground publishing, where anonymous writers attack King Louis and his queen, Marie-Antoinette, and foreign governments manipulate public opinion for their own purposes. When a ruthless killer strikes, Paul must unravel the mystery of the song peddler’s disappearance, or risk losing everything he holds most dear.

Mistletoe Miracles by Jodi Thomas - Spotlight and Excerpt

Book details

Mass Market Paperback: 368 pages
Publisher: HQN; Original edition (October 1, 2018)

Book description
A small-town Texas Christmas story, where hearts are lost, love is found, and family always brings you back home.

Griffin Holloway is desperate: the Maverick Ranch has been in his family for generations, but lately, it’s a money pit. He’d sooner marry one of his horses than sell the ranch. Marriage, though, could be a solution. If he can woo a wealthy bride, he might save the ranch—just in time for Christmas.

Jaxon O’Grady likes his solitude just fine, thank you very much. But when a car accident brings the unexpected to his door, he realizes just how much one person can need another.

Crossroads is the perfect place for Jamie Johnson: avoiding nosy questions about why she’s single, she’s happy to keep to her lakeside home. So she’s baffled when she gets the strangest Christmas present of all, in the form of a Mr. Johnson, asleep on her sofa. Who is he, and why does everyone think he’s her husband?

In this uplifting novel, three unlikely couples discover just what Crossroads, Texas, can offer: romance, belonging, and plenty of Christmas spirit.

Excerpt
He hated cute decorations. Hell, he hated all decorations. He hated holidays, period. Halloween to Christmas was not a happy time for him. But if he wanted Miss Franklin’s help, he’d better leave her creepy menagerie alone.

She offered him the seat at the end of the table.

“Daisy!” she yelled without noticing her sister standing three feet away at the door Griffin guessed led down a hallway. “The oldest Holloway boy has come to ask for our advice.”

Daisy made a squeaky noise, then answered, “I’ll get the muffins and coffee. Don’t start talking until I’m in the room. If a Holloway thinks he’s got a problem, it must be huge ’cause them boys were all three spoiled by their mother to think they were perfect and knew everything.”

“I heard that.” Griffin plopped his Stetson down on the table just to irritate the ladies. “Mom has been buried for over a dozen years. Perfection seems to have slipped a bit among her offspring.”

Rose picked up his hat and set it brim up on the windowsill. “Except for being nearsighted about her sons, your mama was a good woman.”

Griffin nodded and took the seat offered. He had no idea if he was being ordered to the head of the table or the tail. “That she was and I’m hoping the next Mrs. Holloway will be the same.”

Rose’s bushy eyebrow raised slightly. He’d caught her interest.

A few minutes later when Daisy rushed in with apple muffins, honey butter and a pot of coffee, he realized he was beyond dumb. Who goes to two women who’ve never married for advice? The gang at the bar would probably have better ideas. He shrugged. On the bright side, the gang at the bar wouldn’t offer apple muffins and coffee along with their advice.

Besides, it was too late to bolt now. He’d set his course. While the ladies downed their coffee and two muffins each, he laid out his problem as quickly as possible.

One of the Holloway men needed a wife, one with money or land. One willing to marry by Christmas. Leaning close, he lowered his voice and added, “I wouldn’t want this out, but come January, we’re liable to lose the place if we don’t come up with cash.” He winked at them. “You’ll keep that quiet, ladies?”

They both nodded, swearing to a secret everyone in the county already knew. If the Holloways weren’t low on cash, now that might be something new. Word was, several ranchers were already planning to make the bank an offer as soon as the land was foreclosed on. Of course, no one would want the whole ranch, but the bank could split it up into a dozen smaller parcels.

Griffin would rather have someone carve up his heart than sell off the ranch in pieces. Five generations were buried there. His father’s trees. His mother’s honeysuckle. Over a hundred years of Holloways had worked the land, and Griffin wanted another hundred years more to do the same.

To his surprise, the sisters didn’t ask one question about the why to his plan. They were far more interested in the who.

When he admitted he didn’t have a bride in mind, the Franklin sisters just stared at him as if they’d accidentally let in a serial killer.

Griffin ate his muffin in silence and waited. The plan had sounded better in his head. Maybe he should have been more detailed, but the whole thing seemed simple. Find a rich woman, marry her, add her money or credit potential into the bank account. He’d heard a dozen women over the past year say they’d love to marry into his family. Only they didn’t seem to be around now.

The only other choice was to sell part of the ranch, and every Holloway buried on the land would come back to haunt him if Griffin did that. He was out of options.

“What about love?” Rose whispered. She said the words slowly, as if fearing he might ask for an explanation.

“Of course we’d love her.” Griffin wanted to scream that love had nothing to do with this. The Franklin sisters didn’t seem to realize the sacrifice he, or one of his brothers, was willing to make. He quickly added, “Franklin men tend to fall in love fast. We’re kind of the at-first-sight types. So the falling-in-love part won’t take long, but meeting eligible women is hard when you’re busy from dawn till dark ranching.”

A Torch in His Heart by Anna Belfrage - Review and Giveaway

I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own

Book details
A Torch in His Heart by Anna Belfrage
Publication Date: August 31, 2018
Timelight Press
eBook & Paperback 514 Pages
Series: The Wanderer, Book One
Genre: Romance/Erotica/Paranormal

Book description
In the long lost ancient past, two men fought over the girl with eyes like the Bosporus under a summer sky. It ended badly. She died. They died. Since then, they have all tumbled through time, reborn over and over again. Now they are all here, in the same place, the same time and what began so long ago must finally come to an end. Ask Helle Madsen what she thinks about reincarnation and she’ll laugh in your face. Besides, Helle has other stuff to handle, what with her new, exciting job in London and her drop-dead but seriously sinister boss, Sam Woolf. And then one day Jason Morris walks into her life and despite never having clapped eyes on him before, she recognizes him immediately. Very weird. Even more weird is the fact that Sam and Jason clearly hate each other’s guts. Helle’s life is about to become extremely complicated and far too exciting.
Meet the Author - Anna Belfrage
Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with three absorbing interests: history and writing. Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga, set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy which is set in 14th century England. (Medieval knight was also high on Anna’s list of potential professions. Yet another disappointment…) With Jason and Helle, Anna has stepped out of her historical comfort zone and has loved doing so. Find out more about Anna by visiting her website, www.annabelfrage.com, You can also connect with Anna on Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and Goodreads

My thoughts
I have been a fan of Anna's for awhile now so when I heard she was starting a new series I was pretty excited. The time travel aspect really appealed to me - I know you probably would not technically call it time travel since they are reborn. In this story though Helle did not know she has traveled through time. She can't quite figure out why she recognizes Jason or why him and Sam hate each other. This story pulled me in from page one. The characters were very strong and well developed. Anna did not disappoint with her vivid descriptions and details to make you really see and understand the story. Now if you don't like sex scenes then you may not like this book as there are a lot of them but that did not bother me as they just added to the story. My only disappointment is that I have to wait for the next book to come out to see what is going to happen next.

The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin - Review

Book details
Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Harper Perennial; 3rd edition (October 11, 2005)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0060520760
ISBN-13: 978-0060520762

Book description
“David Laskin deploys historical fact of the finest grain to tell the story of a monstrous blizzard that caught the settlers of the Great Plains utterly by surprise. Using the storm as a lens, Laskin captures the brutal, heartbreaking folly of this chapter in America’s history, and along the way delves into the freakish physics of extreme cold. This is a book best read with a fire roaring in the hearth and a blanket and box of tissues near at hand.” — Erik Larson, author of The Devil in the White City

Thousands of impoverished Northern European immigrants were promised that the prairie offered "land, freedom, and hope." The disastrous blizzard of 1888 revealed that their free homestead was not a paradise but a hard, unforgiving place governed by natural forces they neither understood nor controlled, and America’s heartland would never be the same.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Meet the author - David Laskin

For the past twenty-five years, Laskin has written books and articles on a wide range of subjects including history, weather, travel, gardens and the natural world. His most recent book, The Children’s Blizzard, won the Washington State Book Award and the Midwest Booksellers’ Choice Award for Nonfiction. Laskin’s other titles include Braving the Elements: The Stormy History of American Weather, Partisans: Marriage, Politics and Betrayal Among the New York Intellectuals, A Common Life: Four Generations of American Literary Friendship and Influence, and Artists in their Gardens (co-authored with Valerie Easton). He and his wife Kate O’Neill, the parents of three grown daughters, live in Seattle with their two sweet old dogs.

My thoughts
Overall I really liked this book but there were a few parts that drug a little for me. Those parts were when meteorology and the process of putting out the cold weather flags. For me on small chapter on this would have been enough. With that being said the rest of the book was so enjoyable for me that it outweighed the other. I don't really like saying the book was enjoyable as it was about many people's pain and suffering so it was not "enjoyable" in that it was a fun book but "enjoyable" in that it was very informative to me. I grew up in Nebraska and Kansas and have been to many parts of Nebraska and South Dakota that were mentioned in this book. My ancestors were Norwegians that settled in the Dakota Territory where this book took place. I am sure I had family that went through this horrible time period and would like to know their story and how they fared. I liked that the author used first hand accounts to tell many of the stories. I can't imagine being that teacher who had to make the decision on whether or not to send the children home and then finding out the kids did not survive. The way this blizzard happened after a very nice day is so typical of the Midwest weather. I highly recommend this book.

Book description
For fans of Betty Hechtman and Maggie Sefton, the latest craft frenzy is Holly Quinn’s Handcrafted series debut.

Sammy Kane just moved back to her hometown to run a craft store. But when the owner of a nearby yarn shop is murdered, Sammy will needle little help finding the killer.

When a heartbroken Samantha “Sammy” Kane returns to her hometown of Heartsford, WI, for her best friend Kate’s funeral, she learns that Kate’s much-loved craft store is in danger of perishing with its owner. Confounding all her expectations of the life she would live, Sammy moves back home with her golden retriever and takes over Community Craft. A few doors down Main Street, fellow new arrival Ingrid Wilson has just opened the Yarn Barn, a real “purl” of a shop. But when Sammy strolls over to see if Ingrid could use a little help, she finds Ingrid’s dead body—with a green aluminum knitting needle lodged in her throat.

Detective Liam Nash is thrown for a loop as every single citizen of Heartsford seems to have a theory about Ingrid’s murder. And nearly everyone in town seems to be a suspect. But the last time Sammy did any sleuthing was as a little moppet. And this is not fun and games. Sammy is eager to help the handsome Liam—who seems to be endlessly inventive in finding reasons to talk with her—and when Liam arrests affable woodworker Miles Danbury, Sammy puts everything on the line to help clear Miles.

As the case comes dangerously close to unraveling, Sammy must stitch the clues together. But the killer has other plans—and if Sammy’s not careful, she may wind up in a perilous knot in A Crafter Knits a Clue, the first warm and woolly yarn of Holly Quinn’s new Handcrafted mysteries.
