Trade Paperback
Synopsis: Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Puritan Barnabas Horton is still in love with his deceased wife and needs only a mother for his two young sons. And yet these two very different people with very different expectations will take a leap of faith, wed, and then embark on a life-changing journey across the ocean to the Colonies. Along the way, each must learn to live in harmony, to wait on God, and to recognize true love where they least expect to find it.
This heartfelt tale of love and devotion is based on debut author Rebecca DeMarino’s own ancestors, who came to Long Island in the mid-1600s to establish a life–and a legacy–in the New World.
My review: I enjoyed reading this book and was glad I got the chance. One of my favorite things to read about is how people came to America, settled our country and to hear their stories. For me it was a bonus that this was based on the author's ancestors - it made reading the book that much more special. Rebecca did a great job on making the characters come to life and the descriptions of places and how things happened. You felt as if you were in England and then riding on The Swallow and then settling in not one but two new parts of the world. I loved Mary from page one and felt so bad for her for the struggles she faced in her marriage, I can not imagine going through that and feeling as if you were not loved by someone you loved so much and married for life. Barnabas made me so mad that I did not like him in fact I am not sure I like him now even. He was so stubborn and hurt from the loss of his first wife Ann that he could not see the great and loving woman he had in Mary. There were many times that I wanted to smack him and tell him to wake up and take a good look at what you are doing. I hope to read more about Jeremy in the coming books as I really like him a lot, to me he seemed so much kinder than his brother. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what happens next in Southold.
this sounds really interesting!! it's a time period you don't see very often!
