About the Author

Christina George has worked in publishing for twenty years (give or take). Here’s what this book isn't. It’s not a slam against publishing (though it is broken) and it’s not a slam against authors (though some of them are crazy). This book is not autobiographical though many of the stories are true. No you won’t know which ones, cause it’s more fun to guess, right? George continues to work in publicity and helps authors because at the end of the day she does love books, she loves publishing, and she loves authors. She hopes you’ll enjoy this romp through Kate’s world as much as she enjoyed creating it.

Venice in the Moonlight by Elizabeth McKenna - Review, Interview and Giveaway

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

Venice in the Moonlight by Elizabeth McKenna
ISBN: 9781492720195
Trade Paperkback

Synopsis: A Story of Vengeance, Forgiveness, and Love
After her husband's untimely demise, Marietta Gatti is banished from the family's villa by her spiteful mother-in-law. She returns to her hometown of Venice and her only kin-a father she hasn't spoken to since her forced marriage. Her hope of making amends is crushed when she learns she is too late, for he recently has died under suspicious circumstances. Grief-stricken, Marietta retraces her father's last night only to discover someone may have wanted him dead-and she may be next. When the prime suspect turns out to be the father of the man she is falling in love with, Marietta risks her future happiness and her life to avenge the death of a man she once hated.

My review: I enjoy reading books about Italy and Venice is such a beautiful city how could you not want to read a book set there. This book has a little mystery and romance all rolled into you - two things that kept me turning the pages long into the night. I thought the character development was very good especially with Marietta, I found myself cheering her on throughout the entire story. She had to go through so much starting at the beginning - being married to a horrible husband, his death, going home to her father who ends up being dead and finds  out it was murder, then falling for man who's father is suspected of killing her father. How could she not be a tough cookie. The author was also very descriptive in the scenes so much so that I felt as if I was right there - a part of the story. I was not disappointed one bit and look forward to reading more books by this author.

Author's Bio:

Elizabeth McKenna works as a full-time technical writer/editor for a large software company. Though her love of books reaches back to her childhood, she had never read romance novels until one Christmas when her sister gave her the latest bestseller by Nora Roberts. She was hooked from page one (actually, she admits it was the first love scene). She had always wanted to write fiction, so she combined her love of history, romance and a happy ending to write her debut novel Cera's Place. Her short story, The Gypsy Casts a Spell, is available for free on her website. She hopes you will enjoy her latest novel, Venice in the Moonlight, as much as others have enjoyed her previous works.

Elizabeth lives in Wisconsin with her understanding husband, two beautiful daughters, and a sassy Labrador. When she isn't writing, working, or being a mom, she's sleeping.

Where to buy the book:

Interview:

1.    Where do you write?
Mainly in my home office, though sometimes if I am missing my family, I will write in the TV room as they watch something I’m not interested in.

    2.        Do you write every day?
I write every day, but I don’t write fiction every day. I am a technical writer for a software company, so my fun writing has to wait until I have my “real” work done.

    3.        If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I wouldn’t go back too far. I like the Hollywood glamor of the late 1940s/50s. I love to watch the black and white movies where the woman has semi-curled hair and a beautiful evening gown.

    4.        What advice would you give budding writers?
You have to have an editor. Find a professional editor that you can work comfortably with. The editor I used for Venice in the Moonlight taught me a lot and pushed me. She also had some great resources for the graphic design of the printed book.

    5.        What is your next project?
I am working on a contemporary romance titled, First Crush. Here is the description I have been using:

Remember your first crush? How your heart raced and your cheeks flushed whenever you saw him? Jessie Baxter does, and it’s happening all over again at her high school reunion. Lee Archer is The One Who Got Away. Despite Jessie’s best efforts, he only wanted to be friends. Fifteen years later, things are different. Lee wants more, but first Jessie has to unload some baggage—the biggest one being a psycho ex-husband. Will Jessie learn to trust again and make her first crush into her last love?

Elizabeth McKenna’s latest novel will have you remembering the angst of high school, the grief of a failed relationship, and the happiness of true love.

A Lady at Willowgrove Hall by Sarah E. Ladd - Review and Kindle Giveaway from Litfuse

I received this book in exchange for a fair and  honest review

A Lady at Willowgrove Hall by Sarah E. Ladd
Whispers on the Moors - #3
ISBN: 9781401688370
Trade Paperback

Synopsis: Her secret cloaks her in isolation and loneliness.

His secret traps him in a life that is not his own.
Cecily Faire carries the shame of her past wherever she treads, knowing one slip of the tongue could strip away everything she holds dear. But soon after accepting the position of lady's companion at Willowgrove Hall, Cecily finds herself face-to-face with a man well-acquainted with the past she's desperately hidden for years.
Nathaniel Stanton has a secret of his own --- one that has haunted him from birth and tied him to his father's position as steward of Willowgrove. To protect his family, Nathaniel dares not breath a word of the truth. But as long as the shadow looms over him, he'll never be free to find his own way in the world. He'll never be free to fall in love.
When the secrets swirling within Willowgrove Hall come to light, Cecily and Nathaniel must confront a painful choice: Will they continue running from the past . . . or will they stand together and build a future without the suffocating weight of secrets long suffered?

My review: I have to say I have enjoyed each of the books in this series. Sarah has a way with words that makes me feel as if I am a part of this story. I really enjoyed reading about Nathaniel and Cecily and watching them grow together. It was neat how Sarah used the characters flaws to really develop them. Getting to know Nathaniel's family was a plus as well. Both characters have a past they want to keep hidden, but can they? This book moved right along for me. It is a nice weekend read. If you are a fan of Regency books or even Jane Austen type of stories then you will enjoy this book. This is a book fit for both teenagers and adults alike. I hope there is another in this series as I am not ready for it to end.

Be Careful What You Witch For by Dawn Eastman

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Be Careful What You Witch For by Dawn Eastman
Family Fortune Mystery #2
ISBN: 9780425264478
Mass Market Paperback

Synopsis: Leaving a traumatic police career behind, Clyde Fortune has returned to her seemingly quiet hometown of Crystal Haven, Michigan. In spite of the psychic powers of its residents, there’s no telling what trouble is brewing in this burg…
The highlight of the fall festival in Crystal Haven is a bonfire with a witch’s cauldron resting over it. Clyde’s best friend Diana leads a ritual to divine the future, but it seems no one foresees that one of their own will drop dead—or that Diana will be a prime suspect.
Clyde already has her hands full with her eccentric family, runaway nephew, and burgeoning secret romance with a hunky homicide detective. But after another coven member is attacked, Clyde suspects there’s a witch hunt afoot and focuses her psychic and sleuthing skills to clear her friend’s name and catch a killer.
My review: I think this was a great addition to a fun cozy mystery series. It is enjoyable to revisit this little town with all the unique characters that live there. What fun it would be to visit their fall festival. I am not a big paranormal fan but I love to read about witches so for me this is a fun book.It is fun to follow Clyde through her journey to accept her "gift". I like how the author gives you just enough clues that you think you know who did it but not enough to give the whole mystery away too soon. This is a fun light weekend read for both young adults and adults alike, that is one thing that I like about cozy mysteries. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Next up is John who wants to propose to his girlfriend and have the perfect Christmas. There are also a couple of other families that play bit parts, two of them are a couple of friends Jane and Vera. I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Brickmaker's Bride by Judith Miller
Refined by Love
ISBN: 978-0764212550
Trade Paperback

Synopsis: Bestselling Author Judith Miller Debuts Historical Series Set in West Virginia
Yearning for a fresh start, Ewan McKay travels with his aunt and uncle from northern Scotland to West Virginia, promising to trade his skills in the clay business for financial assistance from his uncle Hugh. Hugh purchases a brickmaking operation from a Civil War widow and her daughter, but it’s Ewan who gets the business up and running again. Ewan seeks help from Laura, the former owner’s daughter, and he feels a connection with her, but she’s being courted by another man–a lawyer with far more social clout and money than Ewan. Besides, Ewan has resolved he’ll focus on making the brickmaking operation enough of a success that he can become a partner in the business and be able to afford to bring his sisters over from Scotland.
But when Hugh signs a bad business deal, all Ewan’s hard work may come to naught. As his plans begin to crumble, Laura reveals something surprising. She and her mother may have a way to save the brickworks, and in turn Ewan may have another shot at winning Laura’s heart.
Review: It has been awhile since I have read a book by Judith Miller but I am glad I picked up this book. I enjoy books from this time. Judith did a good job on the character development. It was nice to watch Ewan and Laura's relationship develop though out this book. I felt bad for Laura for all she had to go through. I think she was a strong person. I like the journey that this book took me on. I recommend this book for all historical fiction fans. I am glad I picked this book up and look forward to the rest of the series.

Written in My Own Heart's Blood by Diana Gabaldon

Written in my Own Heart's Blood by Diana Gabaldon
Outlander #5
ISBN: 9780385344432
Hardback

Synopsis: In her now classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon told the story of Claire Randall, an English ex-combat nurse who walks through a stone circle in the Scottish Highlands in 1946, and disappears . . . into 1743. The story unfolded from there in seven bestselling novels, and CNN has called it “a grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries].” Now the story continues in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.

1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington’s troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife, his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is, and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie’s wife, Claire, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces.

The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in twentieth-century Scotland. Or not. In fact, Brianna is  searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family’s secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy . . . never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself.

Written in My Own Heart’s Blood is the brilliant next chapter in a masterpiece of the imagination unlike any other.

My Review: I have been a fan of the Outlander series from the very first book. This book did not disappoint me even though it seemed to take me a little longer to read this one. There were times that Diana had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next with Roger and Brianna's family. It was nice to see Ian find someone he wants to be with. I always like the way the author intermingles history with her fictional characters. Can you imagine meeting Sam Adams, George Washington and many others. I think I would have been awe struck. Diana has a way of making you feel so connected with each of these characters. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

The Sharp Hook of Love by Sherry Jones - Review and Giveaway

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Sharp Hook of Love by Sherry Jones
ISBN: 9781451684797
Trade Paperback

Synopsis: “To forbid the fruit only sweetens its flavor”
Among the young women of 12th century Paris, Heloise d’Argenteuil stands apart. Extraordinarily educated and quick-witted, she is being groomed by her uncle to become an abbess in the service of God.
But with one encounter, her destiny changes forever. Pierre Abelard, headmaster at the NĂ´tre Dame Cloister School, is acclaimed as one of the greatest philosophers in France. His controversial reputation only adds to his allure, yet despite the legions of women swooning over his poetry and dashing looks, he is captivated by the brilliant Heloise alone. As their relationship blossoms from a meeting of the minds to a forbidden love affair, both Heloise and Abelard must choose between love, duty, and ambition.
Sherry Jones weaves the lovers’ own words into an evocative account of desire and sacrifice. As intimate as it is erotic, as devastating as it is beautiful, The Sharp Hook of Love is a poignant, tender tribute to one of history’s greatest romances, and to love’s power to transform and endure.  [provided by the author]

My Review: This is the first book that I have read by this author and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I have not heard Heloise and Abelard's story before so this was something new for me to read and learn about while while enjoying this book. This was the telling of a timeless love story. Sherry did a good job with her research with an added bonus of using the real letters between these two to make the book that much more interesting. I liked the way Sherry developed her characters and set the scenes. Once you start this book you will not want to put it down. I am going to look for more books by this author.
