The Chef's Secret by Crystal King - Spotlight and Excerpt

Book Details:
Book Title: The Chef's Secret by Crystal King
Category: Adult fiction, 352 pages
Genre: Historical Fiction
Publisher: Atria/Simon & Schuster
Release date: Feb 12, 2019
Tour dates: Feb 11 to 28, 2019
Content Rating: R (for a couple of explicit, but loving, sex scenes (no abuse or rape) and minor curse words)

Book Description:
A captivating novel of Renaissance Italy detailing the mysterious life of Bartolomeo Scappi, the legendary chef to several popes and author of one of the bestselling cookbooks of all time, and the nephew who sets out to discover his late uncle’s secrets—including the identity of the noblewoman Bartolomeo loved until he died.

When Bartolomeo Scappi dies in 1577, he leaves his vast estate—properties, money, and his position—to his nephew and apprentice Giovanni. He also gives Giovanni the keys to two strongboxes and strict instructions to burn their contents. Despite Scappi’s dire warning that the information concealed in those boxes could put Giovanni’s life and others at risk, Giovanni is compelled to learn his uncle’s secrets. He undertakes the arduous task of decoding Scappi’s journals and uncovers a history of deception, betrayal, and murder—all to protect an illicit love affair.

As Giovanni pieces together the details of Scappi’s past, he must contend with two rivals who have joined forces—his brother Cesare and Scappi’s former protégé, Domenico Romoli, who will do anything to get his hands on the late chef’s recipes.

With luscious prose that captures the full scale of the sumptuous feasts for which Scappi was known, The Chef’s Secret serves up power, intrigue, and passion, bringing Renaissance Italy to life in a delectable fashion.

Excerpt:
Excerpt from THE CHEF’S SECRET (Atria/Simon & Schuster)
By Crystal King

Forty-three days after he first laid eyes upon the most beautiful girl in the world, Bartolomeo had the good fortune to overhear the maids talking about a girl at the palazzo. Two of the serving maids huddled in the pantry near his post where he was prepping nightingales for the cena. When they mentioned the dress she had worn the night before, Bartolomeo realized the principessa was the object of their admiration.

One of the maids was a thin slip of a girl who served the cardinale’s sister. The other was a young woman who had caught his fancy for a time the summer before, but soon bored Bartolomeo with her empty gossip.

“She’s here from Roma,” the first said, awe in her voice. They talked of the girl’s extraordinarily wealthy family, of her famed dressmaker, and of how long it took to wrangle her curls each morning.

When they said her name, Bartolomeo had to put his knife down for fear of cutting himself. Oh, to know her true name! Happiness filled him like a carafe of fine wine. Her name, he thought, was like the taste of strawberries sprinkled with sugar. It was like the summer sun touching the petal of a freshly bloomed flower. That evening, when he gazed out his little garret window, he wished he could shout her name across the rooftops, but he could never say it aloud. To do so was too dangerous, for her and for him. He would take a thousand lashings for his Stella [Author’s note, this is a pet name that Bartolomeo has for her], but he could not bear to have her come to harm.

The next morning, Stella stopped Bartolomeo in the loggia. The sky was bright and the October air was still gentle and warm. He was readying to leave the palazzo to go to market when she approached. He was so startled to see her there he stopped in his tracks, mouth agape.

The princess was radiant in a red velvet gown, her hair piled high upon her head. Her beauty was staggering, her skin so clear, her cheeks ruddy and fresh. What a sight he must seem in comparison, with his own hair a tussle of wild waves, a grease stain adorning one sleeve. He hadn’t bathed, and he was certain he smelled too much like onions and ham.

She recognized his discomfort and giggled, in a way that immediately eased his fear. She gently touched his arm with one hand, and with the other she pressed a piece of paper into his palm. “What is your name?”

He looked around to see who might be witnessing the exchange, but there were only a couple of gardeners in the vicinity, none of whom paid them any mind. “Bartolomeo,” he said, gathering courage.

She released his hand and shared her own name. Bartolomeo’s heart sang as she repeated the word he had been turning over and over in his mind since the day before.

“Please tell the cook how much I love his tourtes.”

Bartolomeo nodded his head vigorously. “I will, madonna, I will.”

She dazzled him with another smile. “I liked the radish flower the best, though.”

She winked and turned away. He stood there, staring at the curve of her departing body, wondering what had just happened. He stared until she rounded the corner of the loggia. He was light-headed and it felt like he was spinning, like a little bird on a spit, fire rising all around it. The piece of paper in his hand was small and warm. He hurried out of the palazzo and down the cobbled street lining the adjoining Rio di San Luca canal.

When he was sure no one could see, he stopped and unfolded the little piece of paper.

Kiss Carlo by Adrian Trigiani - Review and Giveaway

I received this book free from the publisher. All opinions are my own

Book Details:
Book Title: Kiss Carlo by Adriana Trigiani
Category: Adult Fiction, 560 pages
Genre: Historical Fiction
Publisher: Harper Paperbacks
Release date: January 2018
Content Rating: G (For general audience. Depictions of violence are minimal. No bad language, religious expletives, sex scenes, drug use or underage drinking.)

Book Description:
From Adriana Trigiani, the beloved New York Times-bestselling author of The Shoemaker’s Wife, comes an exhilarating epic novel of love, loyalty, and creativity—the story of an Italian-American family on the cusp of change.

It’s 1949 and South Philadelphia bursts with opportunity during the post-war boom. The Palazzini Cab Company & Western Union Telegraph Office, owned and operated by Dominic Palazzini and his three sons, is flourishing: business is good, they’re surrounded by sympathetic wives and daughters-in-law, with grandchildren on the way. But a decades-long feud that split Dominic and his brother Mike and their once-close families sets the stage for a re-match.

Amidst the hoopla, the arrival of an urgent telegram from Italy upends the life of Nicky Castone (Dominic and his wife’s orphaned nephew) who lives and works with his Uncle Dom and his family. Nicky decides, at 30, that he wants more—more than just a job driving Car #4 and more than his longtime fiancée Peachy DePino, a bookkeeper, can offer. When he admits to his fiancée that he’s been secretly moonlighting at the local Shakespeare theater company, Nicky finds himself drawn to the stage, its colorful players and to the determined Calla Borelli, who inherited the enterprise from her father, Nicky must choose between the conventional life his family expects of him or chart a new course and risk losing everything he cherishes.

From the dreamy mountaintop village of Roseto Valfortore in Italy, to the vibrant streets of South Philly, to the close-knit enclave of Roseto, Pennsylvania, to New York City during the birth of the golden age of television, Kiss Carlo is a powerful, inter-generational story that celebrates the ties that bind, while staying true to oneself when all hope seems lost.

Told against the backdrop of some of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, this novel brims with romance as long buried secrets are revealed, mistaken identities are unmasked, scores are settled, broken hearts are mended and true love reigns. Trigiani’s consummate storytelling skill and her trademark wit, along with a dazzling cast of characters will enthrall readers. Once again, the author has returned to her own family garden to create an unforgettable feast. Kiss Carlo is a jubilee, resplendent with hope, love, and the abiding power of la famiglia.

My thoughts
This is the first book I have read by this author and it was a good one for me to start with. Let's start with the characters. I thought they were well developed and believable. They could have been anyone's family. Then the setting of the book, now I have to admit I liked the Italy parts of the book the most but the Philly and New York parts were well described as well. I liked how this book was about a close knit family and you got to see their traditions. I also liked the theater part of this book and that Nick wanted to follow his dream. This book could be a tribute to any one wanting to follow their dreams. I will be picking up some more books by this author in the future.

Melissa Muldoon is the Studentessa Matta-the crazy linguist! In Italian, "matta" means "crazy" or "impassioned". Melissa has a B.A. in fine arts, art history and European history from Knox College, a liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, as well as a master's degree in art history from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She has also studied painting and art history in Florence.

Melissa promotes the study of Italian language and culture through her dual-language blog, Studentessa Matta (studentessamatta.com). Melissa began the Matta blog to improve her command of the language and to connect with other language learners. It has since grown to include a podcast, "Tutti Matti per l'Italiano" and the Studentessa Matta YouTube channel. Melissa also created Matta Italian Language Immersion Tours, which she co-leads with Italian partners in Italy.

Dreaming Sophia is Melissa's first novel. It is a fanciful look at art history and Italian language and culture, but it is also the culmination of personal stories and insights resulting from her experiences living in Italy, as well as her involvement and familiarity with the Italian language, painting, and art history.

As a student, Melissa lived in Florence with an Italian family. She studied art history and painting and took beginner Italian classes. When she returned home, she threw away her Italian dictionary, assuming she'd never need it again but after launching a successful design career and starting a family, she realized something was missing in her life. That "thing" was the connection she had made with Italy and the friends who live there. Living in Florence was indeed a life-changing event! Wanting to reconnect with Italy, she decided to start learning the language again from scratch. As if indeed possessed by an Italian muse, she bought a new Italian dictionary and began her journey to fluency-a path that has led her back to Italy many times and enriched her life in countless ways.

Now, many dictionaries and grammar books later, she dedicates her time to promoting Italian language studies, further travels in Italy, and sharing her stories and insights about Italy with others. When Melissa is not traveling in Italy, she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is married and has three boys and two beagles.

Melissa designed and illustrated the cover art for Dreaming Sophia. She also designed the Dreaming Sophia website and created the character illustrations that can be found in the book and on the Dreaming Sophia websites.

Coins in the Fountain by Judith Works - Spotlight and Interview

Published: January 2016
Number of pages: 283
Genre: Memoir

Synopsis:
Innocents Abroad collide with La Dolce Vita when the author and her husband arrive in the ancient city of Rome fresh from the depths of Oregon. While the author endeavored to learn the folkways of the United Nations, her husband tangled with unfamiliar vegetables in a valiant effort to learn to cook Italian-style. In between, they attended weddings, enjoyed a close-up with the pope, tried their hands at grape harvesting, and savored country weekends where the ancient Etruscans still seemed to be lurking. Along the way they made many unforgettable friends including the countess with a butt-reducing machine and a count who served as a model for naked statues of horsemen in his youth.

But not everything was wine and wonders. Dogs in the doctor’s exam room, neighbors in the apartment in the middle of the night, an auto accident with the military police, a dangerous fall in the subway, too many interactions with an excitable landlord, snakes and unexploded bombs on a golf course, and a sinking sailboat, all added more seasoning to the spaghetti sauce of their life.

Their story begins with a month trying to sleep on a cold marble floor wondering why they came to Rome. It ends with a hopeful toss of coins in the Trevi Fountain to ensure their return to the Eternal City for visits. Ten years of pasta, vino, and the sweet life weren’t enough.

Part memoir, part travelogue, Coins in the Fountain will amuse and intrigue you with the stories of food, friends, and the adventures of a couple who ran away to join the circus (the Circus Maximus, that is).

City of Illusions:

About the author:
Life was routine until the author decided to get a law degree. Then a chance meeting led her to run away to the Circus (Maximus) – actually to the United Nations office next door – where she worked as an attorney in the HR department and entered the world of expat life in Rome.

Her publishing credits include a memoir about ten years in Italy titled Coins in the Fountain, a novel about expats in Rome, City of Illusions, and flash fiction in literary magazines. She continues to travel in her spare time, having fitted in over 100 countries. And when she is in Rome, she always tosses a coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure another visit.

Interview:
Did anything from your childhood play a role in helping you become a writer?
My earliest memories are my mother reading to me, beginning with The Wizard of Oz - a travel story. I wanted to travel too and I spent time studying maps and twirling an old globe that
stood on its wobbly stand by my parents’ fireplace, dreaming of visiting Greece, Egypt and even
more exotic places. I read books about archeologists digging up Roman ruins and the remains of
ancient Assyria. I read adventure stories under the covers at night with a flashlight until I fell asleep
dreaming of travel. So the combination of reading and dreaming naturally led to writing, first about
travel and now expanded to memoir and fiction .

What is a writing roadblock you've had to overcome? How did you overcome it?
It is easy to be overwhelmed with dismay at critique but I learned to carefully consider everything
that was said and take what was useful. Getting good critique is essential even if it sometimes hurts
to see your darling baby torn to shreds!

Describe your typical writing day.
I’m an early riser. I do write nearly every day unless I am traveling and usually have several projects going: a blog post, a piece of flash fiction, and now a new novel.

What does your writing space look like?
I have a home office. In front of me is a poster from an exhibit in Rome. To the right is a poster from the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and to the left is a painting on parchment from
Ethiopia. On the desk are dictionaries and my Thesaurus (I’m old fashioned and like paper). Behind me is a large bookcase filled with books about Italy histories, novels and travel guides along with other books from the over one hundred countries I
have visited.  The floor has a carpet we bought in Jordan and I have a red leather fainting couch near
the window just in case!

Are there other books in the works?
I am working on my second novel (the first is City of Illusions set in Rome. It is the story of a young couple’s struggle with expat life and involves antiquity theft). The new novel is set in Rome and an island in Puget Sound and features a murder and the widow’s quest to rebuild her life.

Why are you a writer?
Because I believe that everyone should have a creative outlet. I am not gifted at painting, sculpture ormusic but after a lifetime of writing for work I have the ability to string words together and lots of
stories to tell. Much of my writing is about Italy. I have a very strong affinity for Italian life and want
to express that feeling so that others can enjoy it.

A Song for Bellafortuna by Vincent B. "Chip" LoCoco - Review, Interview and Giveaway

I received this book from Italy Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review

Published: May 7, 2015
Number of pages: 284
Genre: Historical Fiction

Synopsis:
A Song for Bellafortuna is an inspirational Italian Historical Fiction novel concerning a young man's desire to free his Sicilian village from the domination of one family's long reign.

For years, the beautiful, yet secluded, hilltop village of Bellafortuna, Sicily, was a great producer of wine and olive oil. The entire village prospered. However, after the arrival of the Vasaio family, production dwindles and the villagers soon find themselves in crushing debt to the Vasaios. Only one family in the village remains outside the control of the Vasaios, but the reason haunts Antonio Sanguinetti every day of his life. Antonio is determined to erase this legacy by offering financial and emotional support to his fellow villagers. He introduces them to the choral song from Verdi's opera, Nabucco, which becomes the rallying cry for the villagers and offers them hope for a better life.

When Antonio's only son, Giuseppe, discovers his family's past, he becomes determined to take on the Vasaios and remove them from power. Led by the young Giuseppe, a plan is hatched that could result in either complete freedom for the villagers, or if it fails, forever solidifying the Vasaios' control. Find out what happens in A Song for Bellafortuna, a sweeping epic historical fiction tale of love, drama, sacrifice, and redemption, set among the beautiful landscape of Sicily.

What did I think about this book:
This was the first book I read by this author and I jumped at the chance since it was historical fiction as well as it is set in Italy. This is a book with family, love, friendship, loyalty, music and history. I am glad I took the chance as I enjoyed this book from the first page. The writing style of this author just seemed to make the story flow for me. It was a book I did not want to put down. Many times while reading this book I just wished I could read faster as I could not wait to see what happened next. The author also did such a good job of describing the scenes that I felt as if I was on a trip to Sicily, which by the way is a dream of mine. There were also times that I really felt for the people of the town and what they were going through. He also used a lot of Italian in this book so you feel as if you are learning while being entertained. The characters were all great but it was it was fun to watch Giuseppe grow in so many ways. I have not been a big fan of opera before but after reading this book I have a new appreciation for it. This is not only a work of fiction but it is a motivational story as well. You can tell this author put his heart into his writing. I can't wait to read more by this author. This book can be read by teens as well as adults as it is a nice clean read.

Interview:
1. Who or what inspired you to start writing?
I never imagined I could write a novel. I grew up loving the Lord of the Rings, and loved to read. But becoming a writer was the furthest thing from my mind. Then one night, I stayed up with my very young son, and when I read to bed, a story burst into my brain. I stayed up all night outlining the story and the rest, as they say, is history.

2. What do you do to help you get over writer's block?
I am blessed to live in New Orleans which of course contains the glorious French Quarter. When I am stumped, I usually find time to make my way down there and walk around the Quarter, There is something magical about the place. Perhaps it’s the ghosts of so many writers who came before, that indeed you do get inspired. I then find a patio in a coffee shop, sit down and began to write.

3. Do you have scheduled writing time or a certain amount of words you write each day?
I do not have a schedule. For me, the most important thing is just being in the right frame of mind. I am an attorney, so sometimes your mind is awash with legal matters, and writing fiction becomes quite a task. However, on the flip side, writing does provide a wonderful escape from the routine of your life.

4. Where do you get your ideas for your books?
At least in the two novels I have written so far, my ideas come to me first in the inspiration of the main character. From there, the story develops. Thus, I usually have the protagonist as a person I envy and root for. I do find it amazing how some author’s can write stories about main characters who are bad guys. I give them kudos for doing so. I would have a hard time doing so.

5. When you are not writing what do you like to do?
That is such a hard question. I am a Sicilian American. Thus, I have a passion for many things. I have two children and love spending time with them in our pool. I love opera, and love listening to opera recordings, or going to the opera. My wife hates opera and her rule is she will go to an opera only if I take her to see it in another city, like New York, Philly, Santa Fe, etc. And I love my New Orleans Saints.

6. What one piece of advice would you like to give to aspiring writers?
Write from the heart. Don’t worry about formula writing. Say what you want to say.

7. Who is your favorite author or book that you would like to recommend to your readers?
My favorite author is J. R. R. Tolkien. As for my favorite book to recommend, I love historical fiction. One of most favorite novels in the genre is a book called 27 by William Diehl. Find It and read it.

8. If you could meet any famous person dead or alive who would it be and why?
I would love to meet the Italian opera composer, Giacomo Puccini. He wrote some of the most famous opera ever written, such as La Boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly. I would sit in his study at Torre de Lago, near Lucca, and watch him on the piano score an opera. How great would that be?

9. If you could visit anywhere in the world where would you like to visit?
Italy. Anywhere in Italy. Enough said.

10. 5 interesting facts about yourself
I have two wonderful children, a loving, beautiful wife, and a hard headed beagle.
I went to the Saints Superbowl game in Miami – what a wonderful memory.
My family lost our house in Hurricane Katrina, but after a long road back, have rebuilt.
I played baseball in high school and college.
My favorite movie is Cinema Paradiso.

The Inheritance by Marianne Perry - Reivew, Guest Post and Giveaway

I received this book from iRead Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Published: November 30 , 2012
Number of pages: 280
Genre: Romance, Historical Fiction

Synopsis:
The Inheritance tells the story of a family disintegrating from conflicting loyalties in Calabria, Italy. Set during the period 1897 to 1913, the region was subject to earthquakes and tsunamis; the land harsh and poverty the norm. Superstition clashed with religion and a class system ruled the people. Calabria is the perfect backdrop for the tragedy that unfolds in The Inheritance.

Caterina is an atypical woman, and The Inheritance chronicles her life from birth to young womanhood. Born with an inheritance of loss into a society that has predetermined what she can and cannot do, she vows to live a life of her choosing. Caterina refuses to allow the limits of her gender, the constraints of her class and the demands imposed by those in power to stand in her way. Caterina remains steadfast in her commitment to become the woman she imagines. Her decisions ignite conflicts and fuel a chain of events that result in dire consequences for all whose path she crosses.

What did I think of this book:
This is the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed reading it. I liked that the cover of this book was a picture that the author took herself. You can tell the author did her research when writing this book as it shows in her writing. The author took me on a tour of Italy and when reading this book I really felt as if I was in Italy following along on the journey. There is history and romance in this book two things which I enjoy and like when they are together in one book. Even though there this is a romance book it is not your typical romance novel it is more real to life which is something that to me makes this book stand out. There are many different characters in this book and each of them were described very well. I really liked Caterina the best of course since we learn so much about her in this story. There are some added features to this book that I thought were nice starting with a map at the beginning and ending with discussion questions as well as the bibliography telling what books the author used in her research. The author also throws in some Italian words throughout the story which was nice. I always like when an author does this as it makes the story feel more real to me. I am looking forward to more books by this author.

Did Chicken Soup Cure Your Cold?
by Marianne Perry
True or False?
a). Eating walnuts strengthens brain functioning.
b). Chewing fresh parsley eliminates bad breath.
The Inheritance is set from 1897 to 1913 in Calabria, a region in southern Italy. It tells the story of Caterina, an atypical peasant woman who challenges social norms and the tragic chain of events her determination to live a life of her choosing ignites. For authenticity, historical fiction must depict social conditions relevant to the era. People at the time of The Inheritance held natural remedies cured most ailments and they would have answered “True.”

How to you treat a sore throat or trouble sleeping?
Cleavers are traditional herbs respected for their cleansing properties and when preparing an infusion, heated water is poured over young shoots in a process similar to tea preparation. Willow bark has been used to relieve pain in a decoction that includes simmering, straining and cooking. In The Inheritance, Caterina makes an infusion of cleaver flowers to soothe a sore throat and a decoction of willow bark to induce sleep.

Do you have poor eyesight?
Fennel seeds are ancient and the Romans ate them to improve vision. Caterina’s father, Edoardo, has failing eyesight and she ensures he is provided sufficient supply when he leaves by mule for a journey on the narrow road along the rocky coast to visit distant relatives.
Caterina’s belief in the healing powers of natural remedies reflects prevailing beliefs and her subsequent actions help readers envision the world of The Inheritance.

I took this photograph of the rocky Tyrrhenian Sea coast while on a research trip to Calabria. The scene captures Edoardo’s journey to visit family. Do you think the fennel seeds Caterina gave her father kept him safe?
