My thoughts
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read but at the same time held my interest all the way through. I have not read the two books that come before this but this book can easily be read as a stand alone. Although I must say that after reading this I would like to go back and read about the other characters in the other books. I loved Noah from the first time he appeared in the book and really wanted things to work out with his family.  I thought Mary was also a strong character as she knew what she wanted and even though she knew that maybe she should not feel the way she does it all worked out in the end. Worth the read.

Excerpt
CLINT EYED THE woman in the car ahead of him. He’d seen the movement of her head when she spotted him in her rearview mirror. Was she going to confront him here and now?

No, apparently not. Rachel Hartline pulled out, signaling as if he were any other driver close behind her. If she was shaken that he was on her tail so quickly, she didn’t show it. She might still try to lose him, but he was ready for that…even grimly amused at the thought.

But Rachel made no move to do any such thing, and after a couple of turns, it was clear she was headed home. Good. There were a few things they had to talk about.

He’d checked in with Logan to learn that according to the watchman, Rachel had visited the offices last night. The security camera had caught her arrival and departure. It hadn’t shown anything of Paul Hartline, after he'd supposedly left for the day. If he’d been there, he must have left by an unmonitored hallway. And if Attwood had taken their advice, that wouldn’t have happened.

When he’d heard about Rachel’s visit, the flicker of sympathy Clint had felt earlier was extinguished. Obviously she knew something, even if she hadn’t been involved. And he intended to know what that was.

Clint frowned. Logan had questioned the night watchman, who’d insisted she’d been in the offices alone only for a few minutes. He could have been covering up for his own laxity in letting her in, but the film bore out what he said. Even so, if she knew how to get into the files, it would take only that long to make a copy.

As for his insistence that she hadn’t been carrying anything but her handbag when she left…a flash drive wouldn’t take up much space at all. His jaw hardened. Yes, Rachel had a lot of explaining to do.

Alice shouldn't like-or want-Calvin. He's English, has a questionable past, and an even more questionable job. Still, she can't help being intrigued. Though Calvin assures Alice that he's worthy of her, she's torn between surrendering to her growing feelings and steering clear of him.

When a sudden surge of criminal activity alarms the community and even targets Alice, Calvin fears that his double life has put everyone he loves at risk. My thoughts
This was a good addition to this series. It is not necessarily your typical Amish as it talks about a gentleman leaving his Amish family to do a job you would not expect of an Amish person - a DEA agent. In this book there is a little bit of suspense, mystery and adventure as the town gets targeted for crimes, then you through in a bit of romance and devotion to balance it all out. I did not want to put this book down as I wanted to know what was going to happen next and how Calvin was going to deal with it. Of course I liked Alice as well as who could not she was a nice girl who was trying not to fall for the "bad" guy, but could she help herself - you must read the book to find out. I will be looking forward to the next book in this series to see what the author has in store for us.

My thoughts
I both loved this book and was angry with the author. I can't tell you why I was angry because it will ruin the story for you but something happens at the end that made me chose up. Now for why I liked the book - Amish, candy, mystery, and a cute cat all good things to a story. I really liked the closeness that Bailey had with her Amish grandparents even though she is not Amish herself. I also liked all the references to chocolate and how Bailey would recite the names of chocolate when she got stressed. I was not happy that someone was threatening the Amish and making them sell their businesses just for their profit. Then when a dead man turns up in the candy shop - the same man who was buying all the property - I have to say that like the Amish said I know it is not right to be glad he was gone but I was glad. The two main people I had in mind for the murderer ended up not being the right person, but that is what makes the story a good one. I also like how Aiden and Bailey are kind of starting to maybe like each other. I hope their relationship continue to grow in the upcoming books. I am looking forward to continuing this series.

Miriam Troyer has had a secret crush on Mark Byler since she was a teenager, but she knows they can never have a relationship: Mark is a big-city attorney and an Englischer. Her Amish community is too far removed from all he knows-and she loves her quiet way of life.

Mark has always loved his visits to his grandfather's farm, but he's convinced the Amish life isn't for him. There's so much of the world to see and experience, and the excitement of his successful law practice can't be matched by the slow pace of life found back home in the country.

But when things go wrong and his firm distances itself from him to try to save themselves, Mark finds himself back at his grandfather's farm. Could life in this simple world be worth living after all? Especially when the teenager he remembers has grown into a woman that could be his future. Suddenly, these two people whose lives seem so far apart may get a chance to really see each other for the first time.

My thoughts
This is the first book in a new series by this author. I thought it was a good start and look forward to more in the series. The characters were well developed and made me think of them as real people that we may all know. Both the main characters Miriam and and Mark had some big decisions to make in their lives. It was nice to be able to "see" what they were thinking as they were going through the process. This author likes to add all the little details to make this story not only fun to read but also emotionally involved. Another good book by Barbara Cameron - always a joy to read her books.

My thoughts
When you start reading this book you are grabbed on the first page. I wanted to know right away who was causing the accidents. Like Susanna's father you think the obvious person would be Vance and his family but you don't want to it to be him so you keep looking for clues to figure out who it could be. This book was full of adventure, mystery and love. It was fun to go back to Hart County and meet some new friends. The author does a good job of developing the characters and making them very likable. This series has been fun to read and while they are best read as the series you can read them and stand alone books and still be enjoyed.

Christmas Admirer by Laura V Hilton - Review, Guest Post and Giveaway

I received this book free from the publisher. All opinions are my own

Book details
Name of book: The Christmas Admirer
Author: Laura V Hilton
Genre: Amish Romance
Release Date: September 5, 2017

Book description
Amish romance fans will love this heartwarming holiday story, perfect for gift-giving.

Benaiah Troyer has loved Susanna King for as long as he can remember, but when his parents died in an accident a year ago, he broke up with her—for her own good. After all, he was now the sole caregiver for his three younger sisters. What woman would want to put up with that? Still, against his better judgment, he can’t help leaving her a gift now and then, anonymously addressing her name in big block print, just to catch a smile. Roses one month, maple syrup candy another; and maybe this time, something special for Christmas.

Susanna has never gotten over losing Benaiah, but now the clock is ticking. Her father is selling his glass-blowing business, remarrying in January, and moving to Iowa with his bossy wife-to-be. Angry and frustrated, Susanna realizes she’s left with three options: one, go with Daed to his new home with a new mom; two, stay in Jamesport, Missouri, as an old maid; or, three, the best yet, flush out her mysterious secret admirer. But how could she be with anyone else when her heart is still with Benaiah?

Meet the author - Laura V. Hilton
Amish fiction lovers responded positively and immediately to Laura V. Hilton’s debut novel, Patchwork Dreams, when she burst on the scene in 2009 with her unique series, The Amish of Seymour, set in the tiny town of Seymour, in Webster County, Missouri. Fans of the genre immediately recognized Hilton’s insider knowledge, not only of the Webster County community, but Amish culture in general. Her natural speech and writing patterns, she says, are uniquely “Amish,” acquired from her Amish maternal grandparents. The Amish of Seymour, includes Patchwork Dreams, A Harvest of Hearts, and Promised to Another. Her second series, The Amish of Webster County, is comprised of Healing Love, Surrendered Love, and Awakened Love. A stand-alone title, A White Christmas in Webster County, was released in September 2014. The Amish of Jamesport includes The Snow Globe, The Postcard and The Birdhouse. In spring 2016 she released The Amish Firefighter with the setting in Jamesport, MO, the same as for The Amish Wanderer.

Laura is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and a professional book reviewer. Laura and her husband, Steve, have five children, whom Laura homeschools. The family makes their home in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas.

My thoughts
To start with I was excited to read this book as it takes place in my back yard of Iowa and Missouri. I always enjoy books set in places that are familiar to me. Next I like to read books with a holiday theme this time of year to help put me in the mood for the season. I had fun trying to figure out who was leaving Susanna secret gifts. That was a fun touch to the story. You would really feel Susanna's emotions throughout this book in the way the author wrote. She had a lot going on and had a lot of hard decisions to make. Another thing I like about this author is that she uses real life issues and gives a different way of looking at them. I feel as if the author makes the characters easy to connect with. This was a fast good read for me.

Guest post
Glass Blowing and The Christmas Admirer

Right before my youngest son joined the Coast Guard we went on a short mini-vacation to Springfield, Missouri, actually going farther north almost to Kansas City to see another Amish community near there in Osceola. There is a cheese factory there and my son wanted to try some of their cheeses – such as a ghost pepper cheese. Too spicy for me.

But upon the return to Springfield, Steve read about a glass blowers shop in the downtown area. We found the address and went to visit it. It is owned by an older gentleman and his son. They had a display area set up where people could see their wares and buy them and then a work area where the son mostly worked, and talked about how the fire needed to be so hot, and showed us how he worked and made things. As we watched, he made a lovely flower, a lily, in different colors of glass, green, white, pinks.

It was fascinating.

And I got to thinking what if…

So I did some more research. Asked questions. Probably drove them nuts. But when Whitaker House indicated they’d be interested in a Christmas novel, I proposed one about a glass blower.

The story is set in Jamesport, Missouri, and while completely stand alone, it does have some continuing characters from other books I’ve written set in Jamesport. If you are interested, the books set there are:

Amish Books set in Jamesport, Missouri:
The Snow Globe
The Postcard
The Birdhouse
The Amish Firefighter
The Amish Wanderer
The Kissing Bridge (part of Springs of Love collection)
The Christmas Admirer
Gingerbread Wishes (part of A Plain Thanksgiving collection–November 2018)
Love by the Numbers (February 2018)

I haven’t read any books about an Amish glass blower, but that’s not to say they aren’t out there. I haven’t read all the Amish books available. Jamesport is an area that is more tourist-oriented than the books set in Seymour / Webster County Missouri. They give buggy tours, have bed and breakfasts, open their homes for visitors to eat supper with them, and have businesses.

All Amish districts are different and the rules vary depending on the bishop and preachers. Some are more liberal and some more conservative. Some keep themselves distant and don’t welcome attention from non-Amish and some embrace it. While Jamesport is not as touristy as some districts in Lancaster Pennsylvania or in Ohio, it is much more so than others.

About this book
Finally back in the Old Order Amish world she loves, will Ariana’s new perspectives draw her family closer together—or completely rip them apart?

After months away in the Englisch world, Ariana Brenneman is overjoyed to be in the Old Order Amish home where she was raised. Yet her excitement is mixed with an unexpected apprehension as she reconciles all she’s learned from her biological parents with the uncompromising teachings of her Plain community. Although her childhood friend, ex-Amish Quill Schlabach, hopes to help her navigate her new role amongst her people, Ariana’s Daed doesn’t understand why his sweet daughter is suddenly questioning his authority. What will happen if she sows seeds of unrest and rebellion in the entire family?

Meanwhile, Skylar Nash has finally found her place among the large Brenneman family, but Ariana’s arrival threatens to unravel Skylar’s new identity—and her sobriety. Both Ariana and Skylar must discover the true cords that bind a family and community together and grasp tight the One who holds their authentic identities close to His heart.

Gathering the Threads is the third and final novel in The Amish of Summer Grove series.

Meet the author - Cindy Woodsmall
Cindy Woodsmall is the "New York Times" and CBA best-selling author of nineteen works of fiction and non-fiction with more than a million copies sold. Her connection with the Amish community has been featured in national media outlets such as ABC’s "Nightline," the "Wall Street Journal," and a National Geographic documentary on Amish life. Cindy and her husband reside near the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains.

My thoughts
This is the third book in the Amish of Summer series and I suggest you read each of these in order. Although this book gives a recap of the first two books in it. The author also had a few touchy subjects - bullying, substance abuse, adoption, babies switched at birth. I felt bad for both Ariana and Skylar as there was a little bit of turmoil for both of them. The author does a good job of combining both the English and Amish worlds and shows how it is to have gone from one world to the other. It could not have been easy for them. I thought this was a fitting ending to this series as the author did a good job of tying everything together.

My thoughts:
I am enjoying this new series by Kate. As you are reading this you are finding out secrets about Angela and Rose's family right along with them. I did not want to put the book as I could not wait to see what they would find out next. It was also nice to see the mix between the Mennonite/Amish world and the English world. The characters were great people to get to know and to travel along with in their journey. In this story the author explores relationships in a way that is touching and emotional at time. This like the last Amish book is not like your traditional Amish book which made it even more appealing to me. I can't wait to see what the author has in store with the rest of this series.

My thoughts:
I enjoyed this turn on the traditional Amish fiction. This story had a bit of a mystery going on which I enjoyed. It made the book even more fun to read than normal. The author liked to drop clues when you were not expecting them. I thought she also did a good job in describing what it was like growing up in a small town. Everyone knows everything about everyone. This is not the typical book that Shelley writes but I have enjoyed it. If you are looking for a fun new series than I suggest this one. This is the second book in this series. It is better if you read them in order but it can also be read as a stand alone.

Home to Paradise by Barbara Cameron - Review

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

Published: February 15, 2017
Number of pages: 320
Genre: Amish Fiction
Series: Coming Home #3
 that
Synopsis:
Rose Anna Zook has watched her two older sisters marry two Stoltzfus men and has always thought she and John, the third Stoltzfus brother, would marry, make a home together, and have children. But John has other ideas. He’s enjoying his Rumschpringe in the Englisch world a little too much and isn’t interested in returning to the Amish community—especially to marry.

Rose Anna is determined to bring her man back into the Amish fold. John is equally determined to live his life free and unencumbered. Who will win this battle of wills? Will love prevail?

My thoughts:
This is the first book in this series and I did good with reading it as a stand alone book. I thought the story was a nice story and liked getting to know Rose Anna and John and watching their relationship grow. They had a few things to overcome but that is what helped the story move along in my opinion. John had a few wild oats to sow before he could make his decision on what he wanted in life and I am sure for Rose Anna it was hard to wait on what he decided to do. I thought the characters were nicely developed and the story line was a good one to follow.

The Amish Wanderer by Laura V. Hilton - Review and Giveaway

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

Published: February 14, 2017
Number of pages: 240
Genre: Amish Fiction

Synopsis:
Bethany Weiss is ready to leave town. Tongues haven’t stopped clacking in Jamesport, MO, since her daed, the bishop, was admitted to a mental hospital after hurting their small Amish community. But her sharpest wounds Bethany hides from prying eyes, quietly biding her time until she can take a chance at a new life—away from Jamesport and away from God.

Silas Beiler was kicked out of his own home. Dogged by a rough childhood and a family who blames him for each new disaster, he begins hitchhiking across the country, sleeping in barns where he can, working for food when possible—headed for Pennsylvania in the hope of some stability.

When Bethany spies a man asleep in the hayloft, she first fears the return of an unwelcome suitor. But when it is Silas who turns and speaks, the memories flood back: a happy summer six years ago full of lemonade, long walks, and budding courtship. Now, however, those months of bliss seem naïve and idyllic. Was their old love strong enough to overcome new pain? Or will hurt and rejection continue to haunt their path?

My thoughts:
I thought this was a good book. The author grabbed me on the first page and kept me going as I wanted to see what was going to happen next. It was interesting how the author took an common tragedy and wove it into her story to see how the Amish handle it. The characters were very well developed. There was a lot of things going on in this story which helped the book to move along nicely. I look forward to more books by this author.

About the author:

The Newcomer by Suzanne Woods Fisher - Review and Giveaway

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

Published: January 31, 2017
Number of pages: 336
Genre: Amish Fiction
Series: Amish Beginnings #2

Synopsis:
In 1737, Anna Konig and her fellow church members stagger off a small wooden ship after ten weeks at sea, eager to start a new life in the vibrant but raw Pennsylvania frontier. On the docks of Port Philadelphia waits bishop Jacob Bauer, founder of the settlement and father to ship carpenter Bairn. It’s a time of new beginnings for the reunited Bauer family, and for Anna and Bairn’s shipboard romance to blossom.

But this perfect moment cannot last. As Bairn grasps the reality of what it means to be Amish in the New World–isolated, rigid with expectations, under the thumb of his domineering father–his enthusiasm evaporates. When a sea captain offers the chance to cross the ocean one more time, Bairn grabs it. Just one more crossing, he promises Anna. But will she wait for him?

When Henrik Newman joins the church just as it makes its way to the frontier, Anna is torn. He seems to be everything Bairn is not–bold, devoted, and delighted to vie for her heart. And the most dramatic difference? He is here; Bairn is not.

Far from the frontier, an unexpected turn of events weaves together the lives of Bairn, Anna, and Henrik. When a secret is revealed, which true love will emerge?

My thoughts:
I enjoyed the setting and the time period of this book. I can not imagine what they were all going through coming to a new and foreign land. The author did a good job of helping us to understand what they were feeling. You can tell the author did her research as it shows in her writing. For me this did not seem like the typical Amish story as it included a little more of the historical and the starting of our country than I have read in Amish stories before. I thought this really made the book even better for me. I look forward to the next book in this series so I can see what is going to happen next.

Guest Post:
Pennsylvania of 1737, the setting for The Newcomer, is like a foreign country. Parts of it might seem familiar—the same hills and creeks and blue sky, but we’d hardly recognize the settlers. People like Anna, or Bairn, or the mysterious Newcomer. We wouldn’t be able to understand their language, their customs and traditions. Their world was that different from our modern one.

The first group of Amish immigrants (first written about in Anna’s Crossing and followed up in The Newcomer) settled northwest of Philadelphia, then a vast wilderness, and relied on each other for safety, security, building projects, and church. In nearby Germantown, settlers were tradesmen, so they clustered houses together in small knots. The Amish farmers took out land warrants for sizeable properties and lived considerable distances from each other.

In The Newcomer, Anna cooked food in a cauldron over a large hearth. One-pot meals can trace their beginnings to open-hearth cooking when ingredients for a meal went into a large kettle suspended over the fire. Traditional dishes—ham and beans, pork and sauerkraut—used sturdy, available, and simple ingredients that improved with long, slow cooking. The dishes could be easily expanded when the need arose to set a few more places at the table. And it did, often. Large families and unannounced company inspired Amish cooks to find ways to “stretch the stew.”

Noodles (including dumplings and rivvels) could be tossed into a simmering broth to make a meal stretch. Most farms had a flock of chickens, so eggs were easily at hand. Today, homemade noodles are still a favorite dish.

Another “stew stretcher” was cornmeal mush, originally eaten as a bread substitute. Early German settlers who made their home in eastern Pennsylvania roasted the yellow field corn in a bake oven before it was shelled and ground at the mill. The roasting process gave a nutty rich flavor to the cornmeal. Mush is still part of the diet the Old Order Amish—cooked and fried, baked, added into scrapple, smothered in ketchup. Dress it up and you’ve got polenta.

Now here’s one thing we do have in common with 1737 Pennsylvania immigrants…a love of good food and a shortage of time! Here’s one of my favorite one-pot recipes—probably not the kind of stew Anna might have made for ship carpenter Bairn or the mysterious Newcomer (ah, which man one stole her heart?)…but definitely delicious. Enjoy!

Lentil Chili

Here’s one of my favorite “stew stretchers.” You can expand it even more by serving over rice.

Ingredients:
1 onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
10 c. water
1 lb. dry lentils
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt (season to your taste)
½ tsp. pepper
2 c. salsa (your favorite variety)
29 oz. canned tomatoes, crushed

Two Suitors for Anna by Molly Jebber - Review and Giveaway

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

Published: January 31, 2017
Number of pages: 288
Genre: Amish Fiction
Series: Keepsake Pocket Quilt #3

Synopsis:
In 1903 Ohio, a young Amish woman must choose between the life she has long planned for and a new, very different future…

Since Anna Plank moved to Berlin, Ohio, with her widowed mamm and two schweschders, she’s found a real sense of belonging. As soon as her beloved Noah Schwartz proposes, they’ll begin a new chapter here together. But Noah has a surprise for Anna: once they’re married, he wants them to travel and live in other communities. Anna, who loves her home and her job at the quilt shop, is distraught when he takes her hesitation as rejection—and leaves.

Daniel Bontrager’s arrival adds to Anna’s confusion. Since taking over his late brother’s farm, the handsome roofer has offered friendship and gentle attentions. Yet the pull of first love is strong and deep, especially when Noah returns. Through each revelation, Anna must search her faith for guidance, knowing she is choosing not just a husband, but a life to nurture and to share…

My thoughts:
I thought this was a nice book. The characters were very nice and I enjoyed reading about them. I felt like they were real people. The setting of the book was well described as well. I also liked the historical aspect of the book. The romance part of the book was good but not too overwhelming. You had to feel bad for Anna during the story as she had her heart set on marrying Noah but he wanted her to travel. Then she meets Daniel and that changes things. She felt like she was being pulled in two different directions. I enjoyed following her journey. I look forward to more books in this series.
