Book description
In 1865, Elizabeth Keckley, Mary Todd Lincoln’s dressmaker, conspired to change the course of the Civil War. Crossing lines between North and South, the band of conspirators wove a plan that remained undiscovered for more than 150 years until Antique Hunter Anne Hillstrom finds one of Keckley’s gowns. She and fellow Antique Hunter CC Muller unravel the mystery that has left a trail of dead bodies, leading to the doorstep of their antique store, Great-Aunt Sybil’s Attic.

Dressed to Kill is the fifth book in the Antique Hunters Mystery Series. Rooted in history, the series reimagines real-life events blurring the line between fact and fiction.

My thoughts
I enjoy reading any book written by this author. She has a way of writing that makes the story move along nicely. I also like that she includes some historical things in her mysteries. You can tell that she does her research. For me I am living through Anne at least as far as hunting antiques goes that is. I think I want to collect antiques but then I change my mind and just like looking at them. The author also gives you a few twists and turns so you think you may have it all figured out, but for me it took my until close to the end to figure it all out. I liked how this one included a bit of Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker and how she tried to change things. This book is a part of a series and while you could read it as a stand alone I recommend reading them in order.

Character Guest post
Dear Friends,

Thanks for letting me stop by. It’s always a pleasure to share my thoughts with you, my dear friends. For those of you who don’t know me, let me introduce myself. My name is CC Muller, and I am a journalist by day. My hobby is antique hunting and lately I have found myself embroiled in mystery with my shopping partner, Anne Hillstrom.

Anne and I scour antique stores, estate sales and flea markets for finds. It originally started for us. We were searching for ways to spend our afternoons and to furnish our own collections. However, with our continuing success we now maintain a growing wish list from our fan list. We scour the countryside looking for these items and mailing them to our fervent guests. I consider you all friends and hope to meet you all someday.

I do have to keep Anne in line though. She has been overspending her budget and I worry for her. I have to remind her often that she needs to give up items on the wish list. I recently found her intrigued by an encaustic painting of a dragonfly. It had very vibrant colors and a large dragonfly. She snapped it up quickly before I could even stop her.

We recently traveled to Cedarburg, Wisconsin, to tour the antique stores. I bought a lovely stone pendant at the Rock Shop. Anne discovered a store that features Art Nouveau jewelry, all authentic. The store even included some Edwardian jewelry. She told me that the store was “expensive but worth it.” I’m glad I was there to stop her from pulling out her checkbook otherwise I am afraid that she would have overdone it.

I am experimenting with some new recipes, which I will share with you when they are ready. I am using the winter vegetables that I planted at the farm that Anne and I are managing. I have been focused on converting classics to low carb to help Anne in her efforts to lose weight.

I recently attended an industry conference, covering the rebar market and while in New York I was able to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and see the original Elizabeth Keckley dresses in its collection. Our latest mystery Dressed to Kill features a Keckley dress. For those of you who don’t know, Keckley, a former slave, was Mary Todd Lincoln’s dressmaker while she was in the White House. Anne found one of her dresses at the Treasure House where she volunteers.

Wow, I have written quite a bit about Anne this afternoon. I hope to share more of our adventures with you. I am currently on my way to Philadelphia to cover a steel industry conference. Who knows what I will find here? I am hoping I can sneak away for an afternoon to visit the Mutter Museum which features medical oddities or perhaps visit Benjamin Franklin’s home. He is one of my favorite statesmen and I still rely on his almanac to inform me as to the weather and planting.

Until next time, dear friends, toodooloo.
