What did I think of this book:
I thought this was a good addition to this series. It is always nice to read books by this author as she has a way of making the characters seem very real and come alive. I like how Abigail is doing her genealogy to learn more about her family. I thought it added just a little tidbit to the story. I will say you should read this series in order as this book picks up right where the first one left off. I am looking forward to going back to Stoney Ridge in book number three.

Guest Post from Suzanne Woods Fisher
Twenty years ago, my husband and I attended a large church with a dynamic senior pastor. Each Sunday, we would sit spellbound during 40 minute sermons—he was that good a preacher. And then a terrible thing came to light—this very man had been taking advantage of vulnerable women during counseling sessions. Fourteen women, it turned out, and the pastor remained unrepentant. As issues were dealt with, our entire church suffered. We were a hurting community. The sins of one affected all.

As I plotted out ‘The Bishop’s Family,’ I wanted to borrow the theme of how a leader’s sins hurts the church community. (Now, I need to clarify that this is not a novel that addresses sexual sin. However, it does address unrepentant sin in an ordained leader.) First, I spoke to some Amish friends to see if my story idea had any merit. Was I was on the right track? To my amazement, a similar situation to my novels had occurred in one Amish friend’s church, and it resulted in a “quieting.” That’s an Amish phrase that means revoking the responsibilities of an unrepentant ordained leader. Just like it sounds–he is, essentially, “quieted.”

In this novel, you’ll see the behind-the-scenes of Amish church leadership, and get a sense of how a community is hurting. And how it begins to heal, too.

This series began in the Stoney Ridge, Pennsylvania community with The Imposter. More twists and turns are coming to Stoney Ridge after The Quieting—so stay tuned for The Devoted to hit bookshelves in early October. Just in time for autumn reading by a warm fireplace!

Warmly, Suzanne

Jefferson's America by Julie M. Fenster - Review

I received this book from Blogging For Books in exchange for a fair and honest review

Published: May 10, 2016
Number of pages: 432
Genre: US History

Synopsis:
The surprising story of how Thomas Jefferson commanded an unrivaled age of American exploration—and in presiding over that era of discovery, forged a great nation.

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, as Britain, France, Spain, and the United States all jockeyed for control of the vast expanses west of the Mississippi River, the stakes for American expansion were incalculably high. Even after the American purchase of the Louisiana Territory, Spain still coveted that land and was prepared to employ any means to retain it. With war expected at any moment, Jefferson played a game of strategy, putting on the ground the only Americans he could: a cadre of explorers who finally annexed it through courageous investigation.

Responsible for orchestrating the American push into the continent was President Thomas Jefferson. He most famously recruited Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who led the Corps of Discovery to the Pacific, but at the same time there were other teams who did the same work, in places where it was even more crucial. William Dunbar, George Hunter, Thomas Freeman, Peter Custis, and the dauntless Zebulon Pike—all were dispatched on urgent missions to map the frontier and keep up a steady correspondence with Washington about their findings.

But they weren’t always well-matched—with each other and certainly not with a Spanish army of a thousand soldiers or more. These tensions threatened to undermine Jefferson’s goals for the nascent country, leaving the United States in danger of losing its foothold in the West. Deeply researched and inspiringly told, Jefferson’s America rediscovers the robust and often harrowing action from these seminal expeditions and illuminates the president’s vision for a continental America.

What did I think of this book:
I was excited to read this book as I wanted to learn a little more about Jefferson helped to expand our country. As well as I have been on a history kick lately and can't seem to get enough of American History. Not to mention I am wanting to also learn more about Jefferson. I enjoyed learning more about the other expeditions that Jefferson had planned other than Lewis and Clark which I know a lot about. The writing style of this author made this book easy to understand and read. Now I have to be honest and tell you that it took me just a little bit to get into this book but once I did I enjoyed it. You can tell the author did her research when writing this book. If you are looking for a book to help you understand how our country was formed then this is the book for you. I thought it was a very good history book.

About the author:
JULIE M. FENSTER is the author of many works of popular history, including The Case of Abraham Lincoln, Race of the Century, the award-winning Ether Day, and, with Douglas Brinkley, Parish Priest, which was a New York Times bestseller. She also co-wrote the PBS documentary First Freedom, about the founders and religious liberty. She lives in upstate New York.

Guest Post:
Hi, I'm Linda O. Johnston, and my wonderful Great Escapes Book Tour continues with my visit here, to A Holland Reads.

I'm taking this delightful tour because my second Barkery & Biscuits Mystery, TO CATCH A TREAT, has just been released. It's a sequel to BITE THE BISCUIT, which was published a year ago.

My Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries feature a protagonist who's dear to my heart, Carrie Kennersly, a
veterinary technician who decides to do more with her life while keeping her initial career going part-time. In BITE THE BISCUIT, Carrie had just bought a friend's bakery, Icing on the Cake, and turned half of it into Barkery and Biscuits, where she bakes and sells healthy dog treats she developed as a
vet tech. Of course, it's a cozy mystery series, so someone gets murdered and my amateur sleuth has to solve the crime. In BITE THE BISCUIT, someone who didn't like the pet retail competition got
murdered and Carrie became the main suspect. That was why she got involved.

In the second in the series, TO CATCH A TREAT, Carrie again has to solve a murder, this time
because her brother Neal's new romantic interest, Janelle Blaystone, becomes a suspect. Janelle's
beloved dog Go was dognapped from a dog park in Los Angeles and winds up being found at a pet
shelter in Knobcone Heights. Coincidence? Janelle doesn't think so, and when the person she
believes to be the petnapper is found murdered, of course Janelle becomes the suspect--and Carrie has to help her.

Why is Carrie so special to me? Partially it's because she loves dogs--and I identify with that. It's also because she's living several dreams in her life at the same time. She still enjoys being a vet tech and continues with that career part time. She also has always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and that dream is also coming true with her new shops.

These days, I'm a full-time writer and really enjoy it. But when I started writing and getting published, I was also an attorney and practiced law at the same time. Well, not exactly the same time. I got up an hour earlier than anyone else in my household so I had some writing time. At least I got up earlier than any of the humans. I've been owned by Cavalier King Charles Spaniels for many years, and my pups also got up to keep me company.

And in case you're not aware of it, all of my mysteries involve dogs! Along with the Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries, I also write the Superstition Mysteries which feature, along with protagonist Rory Chasen, her dog Pluckie--who happens to be a very lucky black and white dog. And previously, I wrote the Pet Rescue Mysteries and the Kendra Ballantyne, Pet-Sitter Mysteries. Oh, and I also write romances for Harlequin, and have been writing for their paranormal Nocturne line, where a lot of the canines I create are shapeshifters who are part of Alpha Force, a covert military unit of shapeshifters.

I'd love to hear from you. Come visit my website www.LindaOJohnston.com, or visit me on Facebook. I also blog every Wednesday at Killer Hobbies, on the 18th of each month at Killer Characters, and on the first Monday of each month at InkSpot.

What did I think of this book:
I thought this was a cute romance story. It is nice to see couples getting a second chance at love. The characters in this story were very believable and this could have easily been about someone you know. Another thing I liked about this book was how Zeke was trying to keep Caliente Springs alive as well as how him and Julia were trying to pull off the big wedding. I felt as if I was a part of the planning and celebration thanks to the detailed writing of the author. Her writing style was very easy to read. Just an enjoyable book all the way around.

From Gloria Lamerino
Ask me to put together a system to measure the spectral lines of hydrogen. I'll be happy to oblige. I know where I can get the right laser and detection system.

But please don't ask me to write an essay. Nothing makes me more nervous than that. I'm feeling that old classroom anxiety all over again. My college liberal arts teachers were always telling me my answers to questions were too short, not full enough, whatever that meant. In my major, mathematics, with a physics minor, an answer was an answer, no matter how few words or numbers it took.

But, to please my mentor, Camille Minichino, I've agreed to write about my life as a scientist and then, unexpectedly, as the partner of a homicide detective.

It all started when I decided to retire from my laboratory career in California and return home to Revere, Massachusetts. To ease the transition, Rose Galigani, my best friend from grade school, offered me an apartment above the funeral home she runs with her husband Frank. It seemed like a good idea until I realized the challenge it would be to do my laundry—it so happens that the washer/dryer set shares the basement with the embalming room. I found a Laundromat downtown pretty quickly. I still had to master the trick of walking past their "clients" laid out in the first floor parlors, and the chemical smells that are only partially masked by elaborate floral arrangements.

Rose and I couldn't be more close, or more different. I look more like the average woman from a chunky Italian-American family. Rose, with her auburn hair and petite figure looks like the Hollywood version. We even managed to stay close during my three decades in California, with frequent meetings on one coast or the other.

It was during one of those Christmas getaway weekends in Boston that I met Detective Matt Gennaro, a friend of the Galiganis, who is now my husband. Between then and now, we've had many adventures as I've been able to help him solve cases where science or scientists were involved.

There was the time one of my colleagues doing hydrogen research was murdered at his lab desk; and another when a congresswoman dealing with legislation on the United States helium reserves was the victim of a hit-and-run; and I recall helping solve the murder of a poor janitor working in a lithium battery facility; and then beryllium . . . well, you get the picture.

As I'm writing this, I'm working on a case at an aluminum recycling facility, my 13th case with the Revere Police Department. Matt just briefed me on the crime scene and the victim, a factory worker.

How does one go from a physics researcher to an amateur detective? You might be surprised to learn that the training is not that different. Not that I'm skilled with weapons or forensics, but a physicist has to be a problem solver, look for clues, and find the culprit when an experiment is going wrong—a stray electromagnetic pulse? An unexpected thermal gradient?

Not so different from sifting through theories of a homicide, looking both inside and outside the box to solve the problem and capture a killer.

Look at me! I've come up with more than 500 word, not as painful as I thought. Thanks for letting me share my passion for science and justice.

Maybe my next career will be essay writing.

The Hydrogen Murder by Camille Minichino is one of the books in Sleuthing Women: 10 First-in-Series Mysteries, a collection of full-length mysteries featuring murder and assorted mayhem by ten critically acclaimed, award-winning, and bestselling authors. Each novel in the set is the first book in an established multi-book series—a total of over 3,000 pages of reading pleasure for lovers of amateur sleuth, caper, and cozy mysteries, with a combined total of over 1700 reviews on Amazon, averaging 4 stars.

Camille Minichino, a retired physicist turned writer, is the author of more than twenty mystery novels in four series: the Periodic Table Mysteries; the Miniature Mysteries (as Margaret Grace); the Professor Sophie Knowles Mysteries (as Ada Madison); and the Postmistress Mysteries (as Jean Flowers). She has also written short stories and articles.

Camille is past president and board member of three major writers organizations and is currently serves on the Board of NorCal MWA. She teaches writing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Visit her at www.minichino.com
