Character Guest Post – Stu Langdon from Honey-Baked Homicide by Gayle Leeson
I'm so mad I could spit. One of my neighbors keeps spraying his crops when my bees are out, and it's destroying my hive. About twenty years ago, I set up shop here in Winter Garden, Virginia on the old Carver farm. I planted some vegetables, and I established my beehives. I love my bees. And, yet, thanks to Chad Thomas, they're dying by the hundreds on a daily basis. Most of the farmers around here understand our mutual need to protect pollinators. They know I close the bees up at night and keep them there until noon to give the farmers ample time to spray. But Chad is a different story. He sprays his pesticides whenever he feels like it, and my hives are suffering for his flagrant disregard.
People don't realize how much work can be involved with maintaining a domestic hive. Between the months of April and August, weekly inspections must be made to prevent swarming. I treat the bees for parasites in August and September, and I feed them all through the winter.
I urge you to please help me save the honey bees. Plant bee-friendly flowers in your yard or garden, don't use pesticides or chemicals on those plants, and buy local honey. If you live in Winter Garden, you can buy Landon Farms honey from the Down South Cafe. Just tell Amy that Stu sent you.
