Book description
Penelope Thornton-McClure and her bookshop's ghost-in-residence Jack Shepard are back on a new case in this delightful paranormal mystery from New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle.

A big bestseller leads to small town trouble.

Bookshop owner Penelope Thornton-McClure didn't believe in ghosts, until she was haunted by the hard-boiled spirit of 1940s private investigator Jack Shepard. Now Jack is back on the job, and Pen is eternally grateful...

After an elegant new customer has a breakdown in her shop, Penelope suspects there is something bogus behind the biggest bestseller of the year. This popular potboiler is so hot that folks in her tiny Rhode Island town are dying to read it--literally. First one customer turns up dead, followed by another mysterious fatality connected to the book, which Pen discovers is more than just fiction. Now, with the help of her gumshoe ghost, Pen must solve the real-life cold case behind the bogus bestseller before the killer closes the book on her.

My thoughts
I really enjoyed going back to this bookstore and to follow along with Pen as she is trying to figure out why people are turning up dead after the bestseller comes out. It is neat how Pen and Jack play off of each other even though Jack is a lively ghost. There was definitely something more to the bestseller than what everyone thought. I could not wait to figure out why the woman was on the cover and who killed her. I always like the style in which this author writes and I loved the twists that kept me guessing until the end. I hope we get to have another book in this series. Worth the read.

Book description
An exploding Mardi Gras float has got to be the strangest murder weapon scrappy sleuth Carmela Bertrand has ever encountered in this latest Scrapbooking Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author.

It's Mardi Gras in New Orleans and scrapbook shop owner Carmela Bertrand is excited to be attending the Pluvius Parade along with her best friend Ava. Carmela's ex-husband Shamus rides by the duo on his float at the head of the parade, when suddenly the revelry turns to disaster. Shamus' float crashes and explodes, and although Shamus escapes unhurt, a member of his krewe is killed.

Carmela and Ava plunge into an investigation of the krewe-member's death, but as they dig deeper it starts to look less like an accident and more like a murder....and Shamus seems less like a victim, and more like a suspect.

Meet the authors - Laura Childs and Terri Farley Moran
Laura Childs
Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries - set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that take place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries - set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

My thoughts
I was so happy to get read this next installment in one of my favorite series. When I am looking for a good book I know I can always turn to Laura. I was so happy to see Carmela and Babcock are talking more about their engagement. It seems no matter where Carmela and Ava go they seem to find themselves in a heap of trouble. The banter between Shamus and Carmela is fun but at the same time you kind of want to have him leave Carmela alone, but then again the books would not be the same without this. This time I had my sights set on the same people that Carmela did as the main suspects but you will have to read the book to see who actually planted the bomb on the float. I am going to be waiting anxiously for the next book in this series.

Interview
What genre do you write and why? I write children’s books. Having young children, I feel that it is important to teach through literature. There is a lot of books out there that lack problem-solving skills and self-evaluation. I wanted to write a series that teaches gratitude, generosity, perseverance, responsibility, and respectfulness.

What is the last great book you’ve read? Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are so You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be by Rachel Hollis. This book is honest, enthusiastic, and relatable. All things I love in a book.

Do you snack while writing? Favorite snack? Where do you write? Yes! I write in my office when my children are at school or in bed. I have to have a bottle of water, cup of coffee, and some sort of pack of crackers or candy.

Do you ever get writer’s block? Sometimes, but it is more of an overload of imaginary ideas that get me. I like to start a story, leave the ending blank, and come back to it with a fresh idea.

How did you do research for your book? When writing for children, you have to think like a kid so I read a lot of kid’s literature. Then I combine our own experiences with imaginary ideas and come up with the plot. It has to be relatable but a tad far-fetched.

Excerpt
McKenna Tate was used to sleeping lightly. And tonight was no exception. She had been keeping one ear tuned into the sounds around her, just in case, even while she dozed.

Not that deep sleeping in this place was likely. It was cold, and the floor of the little cabin was hard. Two days spent in it didn’t make it feel any more like home.

Except it wasn’t fine right now, because she heard something. And that was why she’d stirred.

Suddenly, reality slammed into her. The door to the cabin was opening.

She scrambled into a sitting position, attempting to push herself onto her feet, but then the door flung open completely, and she found herself stumbling back, hitting the wall and curling up there like a startled animal ready to strike.

It was a man. Which, out here in this big bad world, was the scariest thing she could think of. She would rather tangle with a bear any day. This was definitely a man.

Silhouetted in the doorway, tall and broad and terrifying. He had a cowboy hat pulled down low over his face, and she couldn’t see any of his features. She could just see that he was big.

“Calm down,” he said, as if a command issued from a stranger would make her feel calm.

“What?” So, now she knew he was insane, which was great. Telling a woman whose sleep he’d just interrupted to be calm.

“I said,” he responded, “calm down. I’m not going to hurt you.”

“Like you would announce you were going to hurt me if that was your plan,” she said, curling up tighter.

“I have no idea what I would do if I was going to hurt you. Because I’m not going to. I do, however, want to know what you’re doing here.”

“Sleeping.”

“I can see that. Or rather, I could. Though you aren’t sleeping now.”

“Very observant. I’d give you a trophy, but I’m fresh out.”

He shifted, crossing his arms. “You’re awfully mouthy for somebody sleeping on someone else’s property.”

“And you’re awfully chatty for a guy who just found someone sleeping on his property. Don’t you have follow-up questions?”

“Several. But I don’t want you crouched there in the corner like you think I’m about to stab you.”

She snorted out a laugh. “Oh, I’m not really that worried you’re gonna randomly stab me. It’s other things I worry about with men.”

“You don’t have to worry about that, either,” he said.

His voice didn’t soften it all. He didn’t look like he felt bad for her, or like he pitied her in any way. That would not be the angle to take with him. Crying or anything like that. She could see that right away. She could paint a glorious picture of her tragic plight, and he would probably just stand there like a man carved from rock. Unmoved. Whoever he was, he was not a soft touch.

She was pretty good at identifying a soft touch. They were the kind of people who came in handy in desperate situations. People who wanted to wrap you in a blanket, give you a piece of pie and say some encouraging words so that they could go on with their day feeling like they were decent human beings.

Book description
Sometimes the past reaches out to the present...

It’s been thirteen months since Calamity (Callie) Barnstable inherited a house in Marketville under the condition that she search for the person who murdered her mother thirty years earlier. She solves the mystery, but what next? Unemployment? Another nine-to-five job in Toronto?

Callie decides to set down roots in Marketville, take the skills and knowledge she acquired over the past year, and start her own business: Past & Present Investigations.

It’s not long before Callie and her new business partner, best friend Chantelle Marchand, get their first client: a woman who wants to find out everything she can about her grandmother, Anneliese Prei, and how she came to a “bad end” in 1956. It sounds like a perfect first assignment. Except for one thing: Anneliese’s past winds its way into Callie’s present, and not in a manner anyone—least of all Callie—could have predicted.

Interview
What made you want to start an investigation company?
I’d learned a fair bit about investigation over the past year as I researched my mother’s disappearance thirty years earlier, when I was just six-years-old. I’d quit my day job working at the call center of a bank’s call center, and I’ll be honest, I was in no rush to return to a nine-to-five job where my every movement was being supervised. I decided to call on my friend, Chantelle Marchand (now business partner) and two friends who helped me on my mother’s case. Chantelle’s expertise is genealogy, Shirley is a retired archives/research librarian, and Misty is a self-proclaimed psychic who is tuned into tarot. It’s an unusual combination, but we’re making it work. Sometimes I call on my friend, Arabella, who owns an antiques shop. She’s the one who referred our first client to us, for which I’m incredibly grateful.

What is your most memorable case so far?
Ha! Well, we’ve actually only had one official case that’s been solved. That’s the one I write about in Past & Present, and so I guess that’s my favorite. But Judy has me writing a third book based on a newspaper article she read a few months ago. She’s got me doing no end of research, and we haven’t yet solved that case. But I’m excited about it.

What is the weirdest or scariest thing you have encountered in the places you have searched?
OMG! I found an actual skeleton…in a coffin…in the attic of the Marketville house I inherited. I wrote about that in Skeletons in the Attic. That was my first book.

What is it like to help solve a murder?
It’s hard to explain, because even if you do solve it, that doesn’t necessarily mean justice has been served, and it certainly doesn’t bring the dead back to life.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about you?
Just that I’m so happy to be here, and hope you’ll read my stories.

My thoughts
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed it. I liked the setting and the subject of this story. The town was a quaint little town that was nice to get to know the people that live there. I liked that there was both a genealogist and physic involved in the story. The author also included some plot twists that made you want to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. All in all an enjoyable well written mystery book.

Book description
It’s December in Copper Bluff, and from hillside to hallowed hall, everyone is merry—or will be as soon as semester break arrives. Students are studying, professors are grading, and Emmeline Prather is anticipating the university-sponsored holiday concert. Friend and colleague Lenny Jenkins will be accompanying the visiting quartet, Jazz Underground, and Em can’t think of a better way to kick-start the holiday season.

But before she can say “Jingle Bell Rock,” trouble arrives at Candlelight Inn, the bed and breakfast where the quartet is staying. One of the band members dies unexpectedly, and suspicion falls on Em, whose altercation with the man ends with him on the floor. He never recovers, and now she’s worried her reputation might not either. When Emmeline starts to see parallels between an Agatha Christie novel she’s teaching and the victim, Lenny claims she’s read one too many mysteries.

As the clues unravel, so does the murderer’s patience. Em is close to finding the truth, but will the truth—or the murderer—push her over the edge? It will take a Christmas miracle to solve this case, but if there’s one thing in surplus this time of year, it’s faith.
