First, thanks for having me over. Looking at your favorite series, it looks like we have at least one fav author in common, Robyn Carr. I’m partial to the Thunder Point series myself. She just grabs me and brings this Idaho girl home. Or at least close by…Which leads me to today’s topic – Small towns.
Small towns – I love them. I love visiting, reading and writing about them. I guess that’s why I set the Tourist Trap series in South Cove, California. It’s a really small town (at least in my mind) and as the series grows, new businesses are popping up and old ones that I’ve never realized were there are coming to light. Which is so like a real small town.
I live in a small town with an antique row. Each spring, I take a day and start at one end and then just wander through the street, looking for something special, something different, something I just must buy. I’m never disappointed. If it’s end of the month, I can drive down the river road (Mississippi river) and take in the huge flea market in a little town a few miles north of me. Either way, I love immersing myself in the past and a boat load of memories.
If I want a bit of a drive, I can go to historic St. Charles Missouri and walk through the past and present as it merges. It’s also home to Main Street Books, a cute little independent bookstore and the only store in Missouri that has signed copies of my books.
In Tea Cups and Carnage, we have a new shop coming to life right across brick paved Main Street from Jill Gardner’s (my amateur sleuth) Coffee, Books, and More. Tea Hee is a tea set and supply store. I love china, but the only stuff I have is family heirlooms. Not a full set of anything and several of the pieces are cracked, but I still treasure them. It’s my history.
I have a cobalt blue pitcher that sits on my knick-knack shelf. My mother had this picture on the window sill next to the kitchen table for many years while I was growing up. It’s got a crack in the side, so it’s unusable with liquids, but fake flowers do just fine in it. (And honestly, I don’t have much of a green thumb. My husband calls me a serial plant killer. He thinks he’s cute.)
Between that and the serving pieces I only bring out at holidays, I’m pretty happy with my stash of memories.
What about you? Do you have a piece of china or glassware or even silverware that means more because of where it came from?
I’d love to hear about it.
Lynn
